you really worked hard for that ATO. On the central line the t/ops are the hardest workers!

I knew it! I can only agree, I spend almost an hour a day on the Central and overall think it's a great line. The reliability and speed are the things I like most.

I hardly ever go on the Central but when I do the trains seem to be fast, clean and prompt - however, in the central section it is horribly overcrowded

Admit is is rather busy W.City - Liverpool St... all the trains are in service, or at least been taken off 'Long Term Stopped' A train every 90 seconds is quite frequent... if you try to put any more down the pipe, the signalling system throws its toys out of the pram and sits down sulking for three hours....

A train every 90 seconds is quite frequent... They are actually timetabled every 120secs. However, when trains bunch up, I have observed 85sec headways.

I knew that, but seems like 90 seconds once dwell time builds up... or one t/op waits a little longer than necessary at each station, bunching soon occurs...

Never understimate the ability of the general public to cause delays!

Good reason for introducing driverless trains then Yes, and give those EU fatcats something else to moan about! For all its faults; the 92 stock, stations falling apart, lazy drivers ( ;D), the Central is very good. Most of the delays are usually caused by passenger actions, some are caused by signal failures, and the small minority by train failures. Thankfully, it seems to escape a lot of other lines common problems like radio problems or congestion, so a sign that modernisation, is working well, to some extent!

I think it is good that the Central has been recognised for the good service it provides. When first an SA I was on Notting Hill Gate group for around a month and amazed at the frequency and speed of the line. It was good being on rush hours SATS duty and passengers actually being happy and positive about the service. Of course sometimes things went wrong but even in the face of major problems, the Central generally delivered trains at a good frequency and did the job effectively. I'd like to point out another aspect that aids the Central Line is that SA's are made very aware of platform management and minimalising dwell times - as Artery T/Op says, it doesn't take much to block back the service.
One major point is the ATO and moving block signals - most recognisable as the white signal aspect if on a platform. This is a major aid and indeed with the fast 1992 stock trains, 10% has been shaved from the Epping - West Ruislip journey times compared with around 10 years ago.
Also, on a different note, it was fun working around 1992 stock trains - the speed of their approaches and watching them thundering along the tunnel when departing was quite awesome. They are very good (in my opinion) and serve the line well. The only down side is that as every axle is motored, in summer the saloons get incredibly hot.

But having every axle motored, is what gives us that nice, fast approach....

Hmmm... Really rough track between Liverpool Street and Stratford. Do we still get platform overruns in rain? Ridiculous permanent 20mph speed retriction near Acton. Rather unsavoury seats. Other than that, the Central is fast and efficient! However, I still stick to the slow pink line these days.

...thundering along the tunnel... If you really want to feel that thunder: 1 Take a Circle Line train from Tower Hill to L'pool Street (Look out the window for overtaking Tunnel Boring Machines) 2 Change at L'pool St. for a Central Line train to Mile End 3 Notice the frightening difference

There's a 15mph speed limit into Aldgate on the inner rail, and you've got the junction with the H&C to slow things down. And the Districts also come into Mile End pretty fast.

I know, just being a little cheeky. ;D On top of that, the distance Aldgate-L'pool is much shorter than L'pool-Bethnal Green which makes an even more unfair comparison. Still, the speed the Central reaches on L'pool - BG amazes me every time. Does anyone have an estimate figure? Must be close to top speed given the long and just barely curving stretch...

I thought the traction shutoff was 35mph? Most t/ops would brake before reaching the platform of Mile End, making the entry speed look very leisurely to the Central Line's ATO!
As for Liverpool St. - Bethnal Green, if the spacing of the emergency tunnel lights are the same as the JLE and the Picc at Heathrow, I'd say the Central would be doing 35-40mph. Of course a Central t/op might come along here and prove me wrong! I just wish they'd change the damn tracks between Liverpool and Stratford to enable the trains to run the long stretches at 50mph!

Fan Shafts - SJW to Baker St. (Reply #24)
I remember the ears always used to pop when Southbound from St Johns Wood. I thought it was when the line went under the Canal (because my big brother told me so) but it was, presumably, because the Driver was playing about ! :-)

Huh, try EAB - NOA... ;D Yes, PAC overruns do still occur 20mph/ 32kmh TSR is down to 'condition of track'... It's been an item in the Traffy C's for a long time.... unsavoury seats... get some dettol then! make em so clean you could eat yer dinner off them!!!

The speed limit into Mile End is now 35mph. Even when it was 40, there was no need to break until the start of the platform going eastbound if the train had decent brakes. The I/O I had for my job training was very keen on getting around as quickly as possible and that was one of the things he made me do!

But what is the highest reachable speed between L'pool Street and Bethnal Green? Any TSR's there? Doesn't feel like it...
