Does anyone know what year the extra eastbound line was put in at North Acton. I remember them doing it but just cannot remember.

It was whilst the signalling was being upgraded during the late 90s I think, but I don't know the exact date.

It was done in 1992. North Acton Junction was done in 2002.

Why did they not replace the air worked points? All the east end locations were done.

The budget for the Line Upgrade was £80 Million in 1990's terms... that figure included the ne... err, trains... maybe the money ran out and there wasn't enough pennies in the cookie jar to borrow.... This probably explains the patchy replacement... As to track work, EAB - NOA is horrendously bumpy now, horrid whoosy noise from the rails. Quite a bit of 'hunting' at West Acton also...

The points are air worked? They look like the bog-standard electric/hydroelectric points used in surface layouts elsewhere on the line...

At the risk of splitting hairs, I remember the work going on between 1992-1993. North Acton was resignalled in 1993 and I believe the extra platform was commissioned then.
All the points were renewed with electro-hydraulic layouts at resignalling, however the junction points were converted to M63 electric machines during winter 2001/02.
And another point which is just about related, during the early stages of the (Central Line) Project it was envisaged that the middle road at NOA would be a bay accessible from the east end only.

And just to add my tup'penny worth again, the original e/b platform had a GW style waiting shelter on it, which was smashed to pieces when the Island Platform came about...

I'm sure the points for reversing east to west to the west of the station are still air worked machines, they dont look like electric ones.

Probably the only thing that got changed on resignalling was the drive unit - take out the air motor and put in a hydraulic power pack. The mechanism will remain unchanged, even if the method of driving does.

Just to clear up confusion, I think you two are talking about the crossover between the center road and the w/b road, originally a trailing crossover between the e/b and w/b roads. Those do look an awful lot like air-worked points. The points where the e/b road and center road diverge, as well as the junction points, all look like electric/hydroelectric units.

White City had remote control since it became a junction in 1947. The cabin remained in commission as a subsidary cabin (or was it treated as an IMR?) until resignalling.

thanks for your replies. When was North Acton signal cabin taken out of commision for White City to operate NorthActon juction. North Acton Cabin was a slave cabin, never normally manned. As far as I can establish it would have been brought into commission in 1947 with the opening of the extension to Greenford and remained in commision until the new signalling was brought into use in 1993 as alluded to above. Initially the cabin was controlled from Wood Lane Cabin but after close of traffic on Saturday 3rd July 1948 control of North Acton Junction was transferred to White City Signal Cabin, which opened ready for start of traffic, Sunday 4th July.

Just to tie up the loose ends, the resignalling at North Acton was brought into use on 22nd March 1993. The new EB platform was also brought into use and the old one withdrawn from public use while it was refurbished. It was re-instated on 8th August 1993. Trains occasionally reversed in the middle road but they had to be detrained at E Acton first if they had passengers.

I'm sure that the old platform layout is dislayed for one of the DEV's that I borrowed from the TFL library. Can't remember the title I'm afraid.
