As the whole of the central is controlled by one big box at Wood Green, the signals are not prefixed by the box letters. Instead, they are prefixed by an abbreviation of the station closest to them.
The BMBs use the same system too.

Wood Green?
Wood Lane surely, even though the woods are rather absent these days.

As the whole of the central is controlled by one big box at Wood Green, the signals are not prefixed by the box letters. Instead, they are prefixed by an abbreviation of the station closest to them. The code comes from the controlling SER. Bank and East Acton do not have SERs but the rooms covering the area are given two codes.

Ah ha!
Now I know why my ears have been burning for most of the day!!!
WHC2667 is at White City, eastbound road starter. Yes, I've been stuck at this signal for some 6 weeks now - still waiting for it to clear!
