(Sorry to bump!)
But, does typing '999' really bring up a random destination?

No not random, 999 is the train no. so destination still has to be set up. I have a photo I took at Woodford displaying the train number as 888 and dest as Ongar. I only took this pic about 6 weeks ago.

Its also possible to program the destination as Waterloo and/or Bank. I think also that the 92ts on the W&C can also display the complete selection of Central Line destinations

T/Op92, have you ever been tempted to put the "There is no service between Epping and Onger" Sonia announcement on?

91259 was doing something like that on its own last weekend - it spent the trip up until White City announcing "This a Waterloo and City Line train to Waterloo" and then stating "The next station is Barkingside. Please, Mind the Gap, between the train and the platform." every time the doors were opened.
*cringe*

Ah, '259. One of my favourite units... It's been misbehaving for a while now...
Yes, Tom, I have been tempted on some occasions to do that... ;D

the above events probobly put smiles on a few faces!
But may also get interest from staff as to why the customers are being given the wrong information!

A commuter with a smile? That'll be a first...which makes me remember a similar announcement on the District; I was at Wimbledon and heard this:
"This is a District Line train, taking the scenic route to Upminster"
Strangely, the 'scenic' part wore off after Barking.

I had a smile on the Central Line yesterday evening on my way home. The driver announced
"This is a Central line train for Ealing Broadway........ Of course we would have left sooner if it wasnt for the little S**ts who held the door open."
Listening to the iPod so it was roughly what was said. Ah Made me smile

Wasn't me, I've been on earlies, thats not to say I haven't said something similar to what you heard...

Before leaving West Ruislip I put in the code for Epping (46) I contined my journey and to my horror I'd noticed the destination board on the train was displaying West Ruislip. This was at Hoborn wondering why some passengers were giving me strange looks. I remember putting in the code - either I didn't press the button hard enough or it jumped back to number one. I didn't even notice sonia speaking. Maybe I was having a bad day ?
