i have photographed this picture at South Kensington (Year: 24 March 2004) the carriage is the D-Stock Number 7055 what is this for a stripe of the left window at the D-Stock? (is no reflection!) greetings Dennis Wenzel

(is no reflection!) greetings Dennis Wenzel It's an emergency shoe lifting paddle. Often used by drivers as a table wedged in front of the window.

It's an emergency shoe lifting paddle. Often used by drivers as a table wedged in front of the window. Yes, basically a plank of wood! Very rarely used for its intended purpose.

Er...... forgive me for being stupid but why would a pos / neg shoe need to be lifted off of the track in a hurry?

Most stock pre 59/62TS didn't have shoe lifting gear,paddles were the easiest way to remove the shoe from current rail in emergency,you could then put a strap around the shoe and beam to keep it away from the current rail.

The main purpose of shoe paddles nowdays, is to lift the leading positive shoe long enough to be able to scrape ice and snow from under it. If we lift the shoe by the rope the shoe is designed to latch up on a ratchet, whereas with paddles we can lower them straight back down. Oh yes, that, and on D stocks its somewhere to put my tea, duty book and notebook.
