Is there a minimum time between booking on and taking trains into service? I imagine carrying out checks and preparing the train takes some time, but from what I can gather some shifts get longer than others at the start. Also does the same apply at the end of a shift? I remembering hearing something about one shift having only 3 minutes at the end for booking off

Depends on the depot.
At Acton Town, we get 7 minutes book on/walking time if picking up in the platform, during which time we heed to read all relevant notices etc. If we're booking on at the depot we're given about 28 mins (I think - it's very rare I take out of the depot these days!) which gives walking time and time to prepare and check the train for service etc.
Booking off time is slightly different: We get 9 minutes to walk out of Ealing Common depot, and if we book off in the platform we get about 5 minutes.
Booking on and off at Earl's Court is slightly different, but obviously being an Acton Town driver we don't do that now (thank the good Lord!)

9 minutes at the 'City. I usually arrive a little before my official book-on time, time to chat and chill over a cup of tea, etc
