How many of you guys nowadays drop into 'auto-mode' after a while on the handle? You know the sort of thing. You remember seeing South Kensington and the next thing is you are concious of Temple and are damned if you can remember anything in between.
Used to happen to us in the 60's. Oh there was no danger. You drove the train exactly as it should be driven. Stopping starting, responding to signals, yet it hasn't gone 'on the record' so to speak.
I once late at night, fell asleep on the handle and shot through Dagenham East at speed. The Guard galloped through and found me sparko sitting upright with the handle in full parralell yet fast a kip. Clouted me round the lug to bring me to. That is how automatic driving can be sometimes.
The folk that wanted Dagenham East had to be put on the westbound staff train to get back. Strange thing is I never heard another word about it.

Happens to me also matey! I find it affects me more when I'm on the 'pipe' runs, White City - Stratford etc. Last 'known' station was St Pauls, and I'm suddenly concious of Holland Park. I'm thinking, feck, did I miss ALL those stops? Can't for the life of me remember stopping and operating doors/ATO buttons anywhere on the last 10 stations.

I think as in a sport such as sprinting it is called being in the zone. I know the feeling well. When i'm auto pilot i'm better as well.

It happens to me when driving a car as well, especially on my commute, e.g. I have no memory of driving along the Axbridge bypass this evening, but I know I must have done it.

Yes,Chris , but the last is more scary than anything said previously. I once was getting back to London from Kent by car and found myself 23 miles and 3 junctions further on the M2 than I remembered. At least T/ops do not have to steer, and have tripcocks. In a car it is REALLY scary to think what might have happened (and I did not feel tired either)

The worst thing is when you're in 'tunnel section' and the line controller wants to check your location............ When I was on the buses I used to suffer badly with this phenomenon - was there anyone at that last bus stop? ;D ;D

It happens to us all. It proves that you are comfortable and competent in what you are doing whether it be driving, being a checkout operator or whatever. I don't know anyone with experience who hasn't done it. In the past, i've found myself sat between stations sitting at a red as I should be but dont remeber stopping at the last 3 stations. I obviously did, and i'm now sat at this red so i'm obviously obeying signals and concentrating on what i'm doing, but the recording function in the brain just doesn't log the event.

I used to find myself gripped with panic when doing certain routes - "Oh brown stuff, am I a 5, 5a or 5b?", having been daydreaming for the last ten minutes Pay attention, Pike! ;D

i know exactly what u are saying, i often go into robotic mode, and like you i get to a certain point of the line, not having remembered if i had stopped at the last few stations, unless of course there is/was a decent bit of crumpet to look at ,, at previous stations, this awakens mefrom my robotic mode ,depending of course how many items of clothing said bit of crumpet is/was wearing, which at thist ime of year is far too much , ROLL ON SUMMER 2006 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
