Someone put me right here. These new fangled Grades I don't understand. Can someone give me the equivalents to the ones I knew in my time.
They were:- Yardmaster, Divisional Manager, Divisional Inspector [Area Manager] Group Manager. Station Inspector. Station Foreman. Traffic Regulator. Stationman/woman. Ganger. Trackman. Lengthman. Automatic Equipment Technician. Car Examiner [fitter] Shed Foreman. Shunters, Control Tower operators.
I would be grateful.

Car examiners are now Train Maintainers (the ones that get promoted can stick 'Advanced' on the front of that). They also do all the depot shunting now (if they've got a shunting license).

Traffic Regulators are Line Controllers now, aren't they? No. Their new official title (having passed through a period known as Senior Signal operators) is Service Operator 4.

I preferred the old names. Station master, depot foreman, yardmaster. So much of a nicer more nostalgic feel.
Probably get complaints from females about all these male suffixes!

SSL/BCV Track has had a major shakeup in past year (along with changes in grades) but the grades were these up until now: Track Area Manager Section Track Manger Chargehand (Ganger) Track Operative/Advanced Track Op (Trackman) T001 Track Inspector (Patrolman) PM4 Inspector (P&C inspections) HTG/APIE
Not sure what a Lengthman was but I heard there used be dedicated gangs whose job was to clear vegetation and track drains. This is all now done by contractors.
Some of the civils grades are Area Engineer, Bridge Inspector, Works Inspector, Site Engineer, etc.
Not sure if its been mentioned but there's also a TPIE (Train Performance Improvement Engineer) grade.

Signal linemen-Technical officers Signal inspector-Signal operations manager Depends on where in the structure you are. Signal Lineman was a term used for Tech 1s and Tech 2s's. Tech 2s became Senior Technicians (SE14) and Tech 1's Night TO's (SE12). The old AET Grade is a Shift TO (SE11 or SE13). Signal Inspectors are now either SOM's (Mtce/Incident) or Works Controllers (Strangely enough, on new works).

Thank you for the replies and clarification gentlemen. One thing puzzles me still? Why is it 'DMT' and not 'DTM' as the latter rolls off the tongue more easily?
A lengthman used to tramp the track looking for anything out of the ordinary. They did not have the hammer/spanner thing more often a notebook to note down their findings.
Also I see there is a 'DOM' where's the 'DICK'?

The DMT (Duty Manager Trains) as it is now is an amalgamation of DTM and DCM. However it looks like nder the DMT grades review that the Mobile DMT job may come under Service Control. - Round in Circles

Also I see there is a 'DOM' where's the 'DICK'? Believe me... There are plenty of Dicks (I'll not specify any grades though!) ;D
