Right, can i just say before some of the mods swoop down on me and give me a slapped wrist ;d - that the search function threw up nothing on 'bored' or 'boredom' So...... how does one go about keeping themself occupied during 4hrs on the handle?? Especially on the W&C !! I'd imagine the circle gets boring.....and how bout the Vic / Central with the ATO?? Is manual or auto better to drive?

I am sure the subject of boredom has been discussed in a previous thread, but can't think where.

I am sure the subject of boredom has been discussed in a previous thread, but can't think where. Yes, i believe i started the thread. Long before your time though Joe. Maybe it just got lost in the reshuffle or something?

No slapped wrist Joe: if the search engine can't produce anything on boredom it proves that no t/op ever gets bored on the job. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D So there definitely cannot be any previous threads on it. It just DOESN'T HAPPEN . Boredom doesn't exist (you could always try a thesaurus to find similar words then look them up on the search engine!) Edit: the search engine does different things for thread titles and posts. What comes up in one may not in the other

Bored??? Moi??? Certainly Not!!! How can you get bored on the handle??? Still, I do wonder how many times I've pushed those ATO Start Buttons since I started my job.
Ha!

Chris A - COLIN has given me the link to your thread - i joined in June, just so you know Erm...... i know about that thread - i just wondered if it was specific just to the Circle, or whether it was generally across all LU lines..... if that makes any sense??

And Colin's phenominal memory strikes again!!!
However, I think that, in common with most jobs, it's as boring as you let it be.
I think you'll find that quite a few of the more 'professional' drivers will overcome the repetitive nature of the job by setting themselves little challenges - mentally going through reversing moves, signal areas, signal sequences, stuff like that.
Oh yeah and - before someone else says it - remembering which routes you're supposed to take.......

Yeah train driving can be boring - but only if you let it! My thing at the moment is to look for photo oppourtunities - as i'm attempting to create the District line in pictures on my fotopic site - though I sometimes wonder if i've set my sights a bit high Mind you it has it's moments, like today when I finally got a picture of WF37, the unique calling on shunt signal at Parson's Green - i've been happy all day ;D ;D ;D

You can't be bored really, seeing as you always have to be alert - even on the ATO lines, anything could happen at any time and the driver really should be ready for that (unless he's reading the paper, which I've seen a few ).

With something happening everyday thats different how can it be boring ;D Today what apply the rule first off then Victoria shut then Suspended service at Mile End - as I said everyday is different you cannot predict what is gonna happen because it never does. Dave you're so right about remembering moves etc how many odd moves have taken place in the past year? How many Drivers have forgotten about these moves and shut the job down because of it - human nature unfortunately.

I've definitely said this in a different thread, but I'll say it again! The only time I get 'bored' is when I'm stuck on a duty which has four hours of Olympias! You actually walk further than you drive on one of those duties! The rest of the time I amuse myself by learning or reciting the signal numbers. My favourite sectioin for this is South Ken to Tower Hill eastbound, where I know every signal number off by heart now!! (I know it's sad, but it keeps me sane!) ;D

I can't think of any job that isn't boring at one time or another, and I've done enough in my time. Sitting in an office all day is my idea of hell. At least my office is moving, and every trip it does is different. Not only that the job I do gets a loada of people to work or wherever, so I get the satisfaction of knowing that I actually contribute, unlike the whining TIL posters who don't seem to do much at all at 'work' except moan. On the Central we can drive in open sections whenever we want, or let the train take the strain. So we have the best of both worlds. I've seldom found it boring as there's usually too much going on.

Are you only allowed to drive in open sections to stop a bottleneck in the central part of the central (no pun intended!)?

Most of the time its Auto Operation on Central, except at weekends when the trains get driven under Coded [ATP] Manual, on the open sections ONLY. This is purely to keep our route knowledge up to date.
