To T/ops
In which do you prefer driving?
Day or night?
And also (in daylight), when its sunny, or overcast?

I'm not a T/Op, but i'd imagaine an unpleasent time would be early morning/early evening with a very low sun.

I work permanent lates so mainly drive in the dark. I have no problem with driving during the day other than I hate getting out of bed before noon!

Driving into the dusk is always the most problem, just as it is on the road. Day or night, no problem, but dusk really does distort the senses. You half-lose your reference points. Mind you, daytime fog is the worst of the lot!

This was before your time I think joe, but there was a thread of a similar persuasion a while back, here: districtdave.proboards39.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Quizzes&thread=1118598840&page=1Mind you what I said there might have to be re-written. I have just gone from the spare rota to the depot's mixed rota - as the name implies, earlies, lates and anything in between. My name is still down for the lates, and I can swap the earlies for lates - but i'm doing earlies for a couple weeks at the moment, and apart from the criminal get out of bed time (2am ), the duties ain't that bad really. I might even stay on the mixed rota weather wise, the District being on an East/West axis means it's an absolute rear during dawn/dusk on a sunny day. Rain & ice makes braking at stations more 'interesting', snow is quite cool, but i've yet to experience fog.

As I only usually work between and 0700 and 1800, I go for months without any night driving, but since the clocks went back I've been doing a fair bit in the last hour or so of the day. It certainly seems different - one strange thing is the illusion that you're travelling faster than you are when in the dark! Anyone else experience that, or is it just me?

The thing which tends to throw me quite often, is when you enter the pipe one end in daylight, say at White City and emerge at Stratford in darkness. I'm not particular to any duties; I just do what I get on the roster board, unless someone wants to do a mucho with me, then fine, as long as it's not a right dog of a turn, I won't say no.
