Right we hear elsewhere of underground terms of description. So try a few from my time. 'Shuffle the pack' [coupling/uncoupling and re-marshalling stock in the depot] 'Hot one' [hot axle box. [used to stink to high heaven too]] ' Mangle merchant' 'Crash and bang bloke' [shunter] 'Sir' 'Part time Percy' and 'Partners in crime' Incidentally if you had a relation on the job (Father/ Brother/Son etc) you were not allowed to be rostered as a crew on a permanet basis. You could however run with them on the same duty for up to two weeks

'Part time Percy' - a signalman who'd rather chat with hot female SAs and brush his hair than signal trains?
'Crash and bang bloke' - are they the same mob as the 'hammer and string merchants'?
'Hot one' - either an axle box, a woman, a boss who has steam coming out of his nose, or a bad situation one can get stuck in......

You're right with the hot box one TOK but wrong with the other two.

"Part time Percy" - a signalbox that was only open when needed (i.e. North Acton, Hornchurch, Bromley-by-Bow, St. James Park, Colindale, etc)?
"Mangle merchant" - the weedkilling mob?
"Shuffle the pack" - fiddles involving traincrew rostering?

Oh this is getting good this is.!! Well Tom B is right about a regular train crew so chalk that up to him. He is aslo close with 'The Boss' but which Boss?

There was a husband and wife crew at Loughton in the 80's who were rostered together as well

Well the rule has changed then. I was not allowwed to run with my Dad as in case of an accident the trauma would be too much for one woman. Also the board was not insured for such things.

Good try TOK but wrong. A 'part time Percy' was a Motorman who seemed to be off sick more than he was at work. It was a reference to the 'Motorman Percy' of the instruction sheets issued by WCTC during it's existence.
