Some would say better. I knew (like all old LU stock) they were grey. The cab was slightly different. 'Fraid I can't help you much.

They had a more open interior, with grey paintwork, slatted maple wood floor and that blue, green and black moquette, All very 'sixties really. I think they also didn't have all those yellow stanchions, they had hanging balls(!), like the D stock. No windows in the car ends and only transverse seating. Outside they were unpainted aluminium, with UNDERGROUND in red in the car centre bodyside. Edit: Sorry just seen the link above

The draughtscreens were too big on them really. This had the effect of dividing up the car into little sections which wasn't seen as good from a security point of view as it was difficult to see from one end of the car to the other. I know that on the wimbo road, some passengers used to let a C stock pass, to get on a D stock, as the unrefirbed C's were viewed as threatening to some. Travelling on the Hammersmith branch one night on an unrefrb, I was inclined to agree. Aestheticaslly speaking, the cars got very tatty before refirb. The illuminated avert panels and frames were often unlit and got full up with dirt. The areowalk material around the doorway areas often peeled, and the cars got heavily grafitti'd. The refirb opened up the cars a lot, made them brighter, left a lot more standing space by making the transverse seats longitudinal. I know mechanically, the inflatable door seals around the cab doors got removed, the self levelling air matacone suspension got replaced with rubber blobs a la D stock, and the motors got regeared so that you didn't leave a C stock numb anymore. ;D Sadly i'm too young to have worked on them in their unrefirbed state (ok, I was 20, but at uni ;D) but some say they were mechanically better prior. Had plenty of trips as a fare paying punter though.
