I reckon it's around 5 miles from the River Lea which I think was the traditional boundary between Middlesex and Essex. So calling it "Essex borders" isn't wholly unreasonable.

They are just trying to fill newsprint column inches - as an Essex lad I cannot see any connection with a location that far from the county boundary with Essex.
Dartford is nearer to Essex than Arnos Grove but no-one sees it as being in Essex.
