taylor, in response to your question ( see thread) about why Embankment and Westminster stations are closed for parts of night tube I think this might be because rail grinding is taking place at these times on the circle & district platforms. Due to the high noise levels created by the grinding, I imagine? Or maybe you already know that haha!

Why can’t H&C trains run to Barking?
Or an Upminster to Hammersmith via Kings Cross service?

Why can’t H&C trains run to Barking? Or an Upminster to Hammersmith via Kings Cross service? The second suggestion would confuse too many people as it wouldn't serve the normal stations between Aldgate East and Hammersmith. Also the north side of the cirle couldn't cope with all the District line services going that way so they are only going as far as Whitechapel and reversing. The last time there was a similar closure, the H&C service terminated from the west at platform 1 at Whitechapel. Departing services used the crossover at the west end of Whitechapel Station to return west. The District services do the same from the east in platform 2 at Whitechapel.

ianhardy it would not be that difficult with regular announcements. Just run the normal H&C service from Hammersmith to Barking then have a District driver take the train from Barking to Ipminster. There used to be trains (at the end of the peak) which did just that, so that S stock trains could be changed over.

Why can’t H&C trains run to Barking? The District line was running a 5 minute frequency and reversing at Whitechapel. It wouldn’t have been practical to try and run a through H&C service as it would have got in the way of the reversing trains. Or an Upminster to Hammersmith via Kings Cross service? The District was running a 5 minute frequency and the H&C was running an 8 minute frequency. The H&C couldn’t run anymore frequently as there was also a partial Circle line service running on the north side of the circle, along with the normal Metropolitan line service. The H&C normally runs at a 10 minute frequency so the 8 minute frequency likely used up any spare driver capacity created by not running to Barking. Had they managed to mesh the services and change drivers at Barking………yes it can be done, but it can have the potential to create additional problems if things go awry (ie, H&C driver with no relief on the eastbound - it would then need to be tipped out and put in the sidings as H&C driver can’t run it to Dagenham or Upminster). Keeping things simple usually works best.

There used to be trains (at the end of the peak) which did just that, so that S stock trains could be changed over. I've actually been on one of these - arrived at Kings Cross very late in the evening after a day in Northern England and was (slightly) surprised to see that the next eastbound train was going to Upminster. I had heard of these journeys but was not expecting to actually encounter one of them.

So does this mean the platform indicators at Parsons Green will be accurate now or not.

Not yet. The works at Parsons Green were related to enabling the points to be controlled from the CBTC system when testing starts. Improved data for the platform indicators will only be available to the public when CBTC is commissioned (though it should be available for test purposes during testing closures).
