I’m not blaming anybody in particular, but it’s totally unacceptable that that 3 out of the 4 SSR lines should close at 10pm due to a lack of control room staff.
Surely there are enough spare staff to cover such eventualities?

How do you know there are spare staff, the same lines are closing early on Sunday night.

Well there clearly aren’t any spare staff, otherwise we wouldn’t have this situation. My point is that there should be enough spares so that these situations don’t occur. It’s not the first time this has happened either.

No spare staff service controllers are fairly threadbare all over another case of goodwill running out I’m afraid

Many years of experience are required to fulfill a role in a Control Centre. Only a few people want to do the job.

I don't think the picture was in reality quite as grim last night (Saturday night) as the customer information was advising.
Looking at intertube data, there were approximately 75 District line movements through Earl's Court between 22:00 and 00:05 and approximately 30 movements of Circle and Hammersmith & City line trains through Baker Street between 22:00 and 0047.

Irrelevant of the job specification, it is TFL’s responsibility to ensure that they have enough staff to adequately cover. If they don’t, then they need to change something.

One major issue when it comes to Controller numbers is that if someone retires/leaves/gets promoted, then they generally give four weeks notice. To train a Controller takes at least 6 months, and often much more on the bigger lines, with roughly a 50% failure rate. There have certainly been quite a number of retirements in the last few years and The Underground has got a bit behind the curve in training new controllers, given only a finite number can be trained at any given time. There have been a couple of initiatives put in place in the last couple of years regarding apprentice programmes and a rolling promotional campaign, but it's still a case of playing catchup I guess. Very reliant on overtime meanwhile!

Pretty much nail on the head there I’d also add this has been an issue for at least thirty years and the failure to understand how vital the service control role is to the railway has further added to the vulnerability of the railway as a result

Unfortunately it takes examples like this to remind Management of consequences when making policies/decisions - With both the general financial squeeze, succession planning and decisions relating to the 4LM migration

Whilst I do think it's good that they're doing a new approach with a rolling campaign every few months I can't help but think with the cyber attack this may push dates back in terms of those that are looking to be trained up and take assessments.
