Does the Picc run a 73TS RAT? Just seen a three car 73TS for the second time in a week, I’m assuming its the RAT?

Yes, one train is now withdrawn from service each autumn (from 2017) to provide two 3-car trains for RAT duties, one at each end of the Line. Units 868 and 890 are capable of being converted from passenger use to RAT working each season. A specially adapted trailer car in each unit. earlier thread describing the work: districtdavesforum.co.uk/post/450406/thread

Once the 24ts is fully in, I wonder if the two 73ts units currently used for RAT duties will become permanently converted purely for RAT duties?

I think that is the current plan.

If the short trains had trouble like the Central Line shuttle plans found, it was planned to add an unconverted unit to each to make up 6-car trains. But that never became necessary. Maybe when 24TS arrives there will be spare units to permanently make them 6-car, providing spare capacity should one of the current units have problems.

We're hoping that they will adopt 2 x 6 cars plus a few spares to replace the 62s owing to their increasing age. The only reason we'd like 6 car trains on ther Picc is to make it less likely for us to 'gap' it. There are a few locations where the entire train is off juice whilst traversing pointwork. I'm sure the reality will however be the current 2 x 3 cars in use.

Re 62s - you refering to Central RATs (62s) or the TRC (1960 stock) - or even both ? 73 stock is the last chance to obtain such vehicles for some time. I am sure someone will be along in a minute and protest about Central line ATP, but all that is needed is clear from this: districtdavesforum.co.uk/thread/33246/central-lines-62ts-rat-relatedand no blocking point; money has to be spent whatever stock is used.

Yes, I was referring to the 2 Central line Sandite trains, although now you come to mention it, seeing that the TRV car is a converted 73 stock that could also be a plan. Not sure if there is the money to replace those trains even when the 73TS units become available. Surely it would be prudent to keep a few trains for when conversion money does become available? Those old girls can't carry on forever as much as it pains me to say that.

OK, understood thanks, the Picc. is outside both my work and travel domain, indeed I seldom use Picc north of KGX for any reason; I was not aware Picc RAT operated out of Cockfosters as well as Northfields. Surprised in one way the open air section of the Picc north end is long enough to need its own RAT, but, like I say, Picc is outside my norm. Prudency is not often followed.

I recall it seemed surprising when both the Asset Inspection Train and Tunnel Cleaning Train projects were scrapped around the same time none of the 67/72TS units, recently overhauled for these projects, were repurposed to keep the existing TRV going - they decided to retain and overhaul the 1960TS pilot cars. And LUL have recently acquired the 62TS unit at Hainault, sadly no longer preserved by Cravens Heritage Trains, to be stripped for RAT spares.

The track recording train (TRV) has two 1960 cravens motor cars and LUL had to ask CHT to loan them the motor’s from the 1960 motor cars that belong to Cravens Heritage Trains to keep the TRV running. This was cheaper than using cars of the 67/72TS units that were scrapped. The TRV is a 1973 stock trailer car which has a the kit to do the track recording.
