From Saturday 30 September 2023, cash payments at Southwark station will be suspended for at least two years.
We have had to make this change due to commercial development works that will take place above Southwark station. To accommodate this work, we need to make changes that mean we cannot store cash at the station for the duration of the development.
During this time, customers will only be able to top up their Oyster card or buy tickets using a debit or credit card. Customers can also top up with TfL’s Oyster app or use contactless to pay as you go at the gates.
To inform customers of this change we will be displaying posters at Southwark. When the station becomes cashless, signage on ticket machines will advise customers that only payment cards are accepted. Coin slots will be covered to remove access.
Oyster card refunds
Oyster card refunds will not be available at Southwark station.
Customers can use ticket machines at other Tube stations, including nearby Waterloo station.
Customers should visit www.tfl.gov.uk/refunds for more about refunds.
Benefits of contactless
Contactless can be used to pay as you go at the gates:
No need to top up
Same adult pay as you go fares as Oyster
Always use the same card or phone to touch in and touch out
Local Oyster ticket stop
Customers that need to use cash can top up at the nearby Oyster ticket stop, which is 165 meters from the main entrance of the station.
Local Express
202-206 Unit 2
Union Street
SE1 0LX
(Oyster top up is only available between 04:30 and 23:44)
Vulnerable customers
Station staff will still be encouraged to use the ‘inability to pay’ form for applicable vulnerable customers.
Waterloo station remains the closest cash accepting station on the Jubilee line and customers can be directed here when Oyster top up is not available at the local Oyster Ticket Stop (from 23:44 until 04:30).
