I will guess East Putney as well: south end of westbound platform.

Looks familiar. I'm not certain, but I don't think it's Southfields because no flowerbeds are visible in the mirror.
There seems to be a grassed platform in the reflection, so I'll join the East Putney W/B crowd.

The station answer is Southbound/Westbound mirror at East Putney. The background is as yet unanswered, so I'll leave it open for now.....

The District line runs East/West, not South/North! ;D

The District line runs East/West, not South/North! ;D It's a good point you make..... However, not knowing the station, I don't really know what my provided answer means..... Possibly a South facing mirror on the Westbound platform?? I think ChrisM will have to help a bit here!

I believe that the Wimbledon branch used to be described as northbound/southbound, and trains are heading south at this point!

See the quiz thread for 16th May 2007 for evidence of the change to eastbound/westbound. JTD: do 'down' trains use the mirror?

Being my local station, the platforms at East Putney are designated as east/westbound but are aligned approximately north/south (as is much of the Wimbledon branch). In my answer, I was referring to the south end (i.e. nearest Wimbledon) of the westbound platform. Sorry if this caused any confusion.

So what about the holey brick-lined thing? I don't think it's Roman, looks dated c. 18th C, but beyond that, I don't have any idea and I'm intrigued!

Sorry, I'd forgotten this was still open.
It's the input shaft of a lime kiln at Moira Furnace near Ashby de la Zouch. Your get points for your dating - it's early 19th century, the blast furnace the kilns supplied was constructed in 1804.

Aww, that's not fair, I always expect these extra pics to be somewhere in London! I'm chuffed I got the dating about right, it's been yeeeears since I studied any industrial archaeology but it was one of the modules I did in my degree (Medieval Arch). (Isn't Ashby where they made KP crisps? Mmmm.... potatoes.... )

Google agrees with you that KP crisps are made in Ashby.
As for background photos - there's no restriction on where they can be of. I just pictures I have that fit - on two occasions I've taken photos specifically to be used as backgrounds - Tower Bridge and Valentine's Park.
Valentine's Park is the only one of the 13 (9 have appeared so far) backgrounds/insets this month to be from London.
The Tower Bridge appearing with Tower Hill is the closest pairing to date, closely followed by Valentines Park/Gants Hill. I don't expect the other extreme of High Barnet and the view from the Sky Tower in Aukland, New Zealand (unfortunately not my photo!) will ever be surpassed!
If there is interest, I'll compile a list of background photos used. It wont happen until I've finished preparing March's quiz though (with a couple of exceptions, up to the 16th is currently done, and I'm off to take the final photographs I need tomorrow.)

If there is interest, I'll compile a list of background photos used. I think it would be interesting. Surely not a top priority task... if/when time permits ...
