Wherever it is, it's new. The bricks look new and the platform furniture looks new!

Just out of interest, how is that station supposed to be pronounced, or what does Sonia say? Being one to never have any cause to go out to that part of the world it's always intrigued me.
Boyce, Boys or Boi?

I have been looking up some history of Theydon Bois, and it appears that the history goes back to Doomsday, so I would suggest that as Theydon was a consistently-used name, associating with 'bois', which I would imagine was Norman French for 'wood', that this was a initially a small village in/near a wood that acquired a church, and then charter, manor hall, etc.

You're not far wrong there. When I was at school, my French teacher used to get annoyed at the fact everybody pronounced it Theydon 'Boys' as opposed to 'Bwah', because it is indeed a French word for 'wood'.

Yes, absolutely correct. Although Sonia says Theydon "Boys" but with a rather sharp 's' on the end.... almost "Boyce"....
I live very close to Theydon Bois. It's set in a small village and is set behind two pubs and a lovely lovely bakers. I certainly recommend Theydon Bois Bakery!
Anyway...back to business... Yes - it's a very quiet station. It's neighbour Debden is getting more and more busy than it used to be - especially with the number of students for Epping Forest College increasing. I was rather surprised the other day... I had to wait at Debden for the next Epping train and the number of students was a real shock to me!
Theydon Bois on the other hand is much calmer...they do like their flower beds on that platform, that's for sure!

Hmm, nice pub in the entranceway to the station! If only the bakers opened a sub-outlet in Leytonstone or West Ruislip!

Yes...but have you tasted the bacon sarnies at Loughton!? Can always smell the scent of bacon at Loughton. What a tease to the passing T/Ops!

I got my copy of 'What's In A Name?' out to have a look. "Theydon Bois was known as Thayden de Bosco and held by Hugh de Bossco in 1240, but this family name seems to be of local and not French origin and is derived from the wood in Theydon. Theydon itself means, perhaps, a 'valley where thatch was obtained'.
"The station was opened as THEYDON by the Great Eastern Railway on 24 April 2865; re-named THEYDON BOIS on 1 December 1865. First used by Undergound trains on 25 September 1949."
There are several 'boys/bois' around - Chesham Bois is pronounced 'boyce' or 'boys' and there's a village called Blackboys in East Sussex which is nothing to do with children but is, again, based on 'bois' (pron. bwah), French for wood.

Chesham Bois is pronounced 'boyce' or 'boys' ...and that's because it has nothing to do with woods, but is from the name of the landowners many years ago ('du Bois', and later 'du Boyes').
