I apologise for my rough translation:
U2 update with the latest technology
With the U2 update from the end of May 2021, the public infrastructure will be modernized for the coming decades. For passengers, subway operations will be even more pleasant and reliable in the future.
The U2 route between Karlsplatz and Rathaus is being prepared for the fully automatic operation of the new U5 line. The train protection technology is being updated for this. In addition, 144 platform screen doors and around 16,000 square meters of glass are being installed in the Rathaus, Volkstheater, Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz stations. To do this, all platform edges in the stations will be removed and rebuilt. The track systems will be renewed in the entire section and a total of 4.8 kilometers of rails will be replaced.
The systems in the stations are also being brought up to the latest state of the art. A total of 6 elevators including elevator technology and cabling as well as 10 escalators will be renewed by autumn 2023. The lighting in the stations will be upgraded to modern, energy-saving LED lamps. A new tactile guidance system will be installed to improve orientation for the visually impaired.
New tunnel connections at Schottentor and Frankhplatz
At the same time, the U2 will get a new route tunnel with the U2xU5 public transport expansion from Schottentor, which will be linked to the future U5 at the town hall. For this purpose, the existing U2 tunnel in the area of Universitätsstraße has to be opened up.
The construction of the new U5 station at Frankhplatz near Landesgerichtsstraße is also linked to the existing U2 tunnel by means of an open construction method. In the future, the U5 will submerge between the tracks of the current U2 route and, with further expansion, will travel via the 9th district to Hernals.
The U5 to the Frankhplatz station at a depth of around 20 meters should be completed by 2026
(This ties in with my comment of today's date on the 'Circle Line Suspended 4 Jan. 23' thread: districtdavesforum.co.uk/thread/33441/circle-line-suspended-jan-23)
