'Train cancellations' seems to be a regular occurence lately, and is a bit of a catch all phrase that avoids explaining why the trains are cancelled.
Are the trains cancelled because of faulty trains, or because of a lack of available drivers, or a mixture of both?
At Leytonstone this evening, I got off an eastbound Hainault via Newbury Park train, which remained in the platform for a good few minutes because there was no driver. The driver who was waiting to be relieved said that we would wait on the platform until the new driver came. Unfortunatley, no driver did come and with two Epping branch trains immediately behind, the destination was changed to South Woodford and the original driver continued to the sidings at Woodford. At Leytonstone, it all felt a bit last minute.

I bet that displeased many passengers who now had to vacate their seats and wait for the next train via Wanstead on a bitterly cold platform that has some snow om it.

I bet that displeased many passengers who now had to vacate their seats and wait for the next train via Wanstead on a bitterly cold platform that has some snow om it. It did! But the driver was excellent in keeping the passengers informed, which makes a big difference. The same is not always true on the platforms, unfortunately. Today, a shuttle seems to be running between Epping - Leytonstone, Hainault via Newbury Park - Ealing Broadway, and North Acton - West Ruislip. The same thing happened earlier last week. Not ideal for people with reduced mobility/pushchairs/luggage - transferring at Leytonstone from eastbound platform 3, down the stairs, and up the stairs to platform 2 where the Epping service runs from. The status today is "severe delays due to train cancellations and earlier faulty trains" which implies that 'train cancellations' is separate to 'faulty trains' - a lack of staff?

It's a lack of available drivers.
Sickness level's across the combine are high at the moment; coupled with LU tightening up staffing level's in the wake of financial constraints caused by Covid/Government bail outs, unfortunately some lines are suffering a high number of cancelled trains. It becomes more prevalent at the weekends as weekdays are prioritised.
Unplanned station closures have been occurring recently for the same reason.

At Leytonstone, it all felt a bit last minute. It was most probably down to a last minute blow out and no spare available to step in and cover it. It's not always possible to have a plan in place when something occurs without prior notice.

Another Line example yesterday was the District operating a special reduced service as predicted absences at two locations were over 30. Upminster-Olympia 18 trains Tower Hill-Ealing 8 (initially 4) trains Edgware Road-Wimbledon usual 8 trains High Street-Richmond (NR strike/signal problems allowing) 4 trains

It's not always possible to have a plan in place when something occurs without prior notice. Apparently, the government plan to legislate to make it illegal for trains to break down without giving two days notice. It will be included with the legislation to force hospitals with bed shortages to install more beds.

Two weeks ago there were no recorded Covid cases in my borough (Greenwich). Just under 30,000 cases today.

Service seems to be good today, with a train running every 3-4 minutes in the central section. Has been advertised as a good service all day.

Train cancellations seeming to get worse lately. Nearly every day now severe delays because of a shortage of trains. I know 5 are in use for the CLIP. How big is the maintenance pool and does anyone know how many are missing from service every peak? đ

I wonder why so many trains are getting cancelled (more than usual...)? Is it anything to do with low railhead adhesion?
Incidentally, many of the trains that are in service are in a bit of a sorry state... I have seen a few trains running with graffiti on the outside of some carriages... Presumably they can't afford to take them out of service to be cleaned, because there is a shortage of trains...

yesterdayâs figures: AM peak 20 trains cancelled from TTN88/23 (71) PM peak 15 trains cancelled from TTN88/23 (71) So thatâs just 51 trains in service! Whatâs the cause of 20 cancelled in a peak? Thatâs a shockingly high number! Thanks Dstock7080 for those numbers đ

Three weeks this has been going on. Since Iâve returned from Annual Leave three weeks ago, weâve been going between severe and minor delays whilst advising people to take the first available train and change where necessary.

Thirty-five peak trains cancelled in one day.
It beggars belief!

I took the Central Line today & yesterday and it wasn't the best. Trains from Epping were going to Leytonstone, from there they would turn into Loughton trains. 20 min wait for a train in the eastern end, along with several gaps in the central section.
What on earth happening to the 92s? Is it just purely down to defective trains combined with a shortage of train operators?

The term Iâve heard is many trains have âflashed motorsâ which means motor issues, plus now the train that suffered an arson attack being taken out of service, also the massive increase in graffiti. The Central line is truly suffering at the moment and at this stage, I understand everyoneâs frustrations.

I don't think graffiti has significantly increased recently, your just seeing more of it. Normally a graffitied train is kept in the depot until its been cleaned, but because they have so few working trains at the moment they don't have the luxury of doing that - if it runs its in public service.

The service seems to be getting progressively worse each week at the moment. Waits of 9-12 mins at bank! Shocking

A customer incident at Mile End briefly suspended the westbound (as I'm writing this the live feed says the next train from Liverpool Street is in Woodford siding). I wonder how much longer the service can continue like this. Will there even be a service to run in a few weeks?

I saw a letter today (dated 6th December) publicly displayed (taped to wall) at Roding Valley which stated "currently there are a high number of long term stopped units in the depots awaiting supply of traction motors and wheel sets which have been sent off to be reconditioned at the Railway Engineering Workshop (REW) in Acton. Unfortunately, there are delays in getting the motors and wheel sets back from REW which is causing the fleet to declare the high number of cancellations. However, our fleet colleagues are focussing on addressing the short-term casualty work, which means reconfiguring the trains, uncoupling 2 car units to make up a good 8 car train".
Hopefully it will get resolved soon, as it is noticeable especially at Roding Valley where a cancelled train can leave a very long gap of 30+ minutes - making it quicker to walk to Woodford or Buckhurst Hill...

The term Iâve heard is many trains have âflashed motorsâ which means motor issues, Assuming these are using DC motors (AFAIK correct), there's an occurrence called a commutator flashover which can destroy the brushes, brush holders, and often part of the commutator (it's not pretty). Basically you take some conductive dust, with maybe water or high humidity mixed in, and smear it on the commutator; it gets pushed between the bars and has a low enough electrical resistance to conduct between the commutator bars and maybe arc to the frame.

Zbang thanks for the link re the flashed over Motor, the Cental Line 1992 stock does indeed have DC motors and the Winter weather in the UK has increased the the amount of trainâs out of service.

I've been on annual leave for the last two weeks but we've been cancelling trains for about a month due to lack of available stock. A few times when I booked on I've been told that my first half was cancelled and gone straight to wherever my meal relief was or I've finished my meal relief, been told that my second half was cancelled and booked off early.

Sat on a 92 which is heavily graffitied. I think this is the first time in a few weeks that they're advertising a good service on the entire line. How many trains have been cancelled today?

Well the Sunday Service on the Central Line has fewer trains than other days If all the trains with graffiti were cancelled hardly any trains would be in service .

How many trains have been cancelled today? 16 trains cancelled at present. That's been the average across the last week, marginally ticking down compared to the week before

Word from my ASLEF rep that we'll be getting a new timetable in September with the current 78 trains in the peak reduced to 54
Also Waterloo & City will return to five train service Monday to Thursday and four train on Friday
