I remember seeing a diagram somewhere that showed an earlier plan whereby the new Dean Street entrance would have been connected to both the Elizabeth line and the Central line. This connection would have allowed interchange between the two without going through a gateline but it ended up being dropped in favour of simple direct escalators to the Elizabeth. Interchange with the Central at TCR isn't seen as that big of a deal because of the abundance of interchanges between the two, in particular at Bond Street and Liverpool Street covering both ends of the central section.
stuartroy The signposted Central line - Crossrail interchange at Tottenham Court Road is as you describe, effectively an Out of Station Interchange through gatelines. You can transfer via the Northern line but it is a rather convoluted route for what it's worth. Bond Street is in my opinion the most favourable interchange between the Central line and Crossrail in Zone 1.

Only if you use the platform entrance at the western end of the Elizabeth line platforms.
Added bonuses are that you will pass a small seating area in the interchange passageway and at the Elizabeth line end of this passageway you can see two so-called works of art* - one above the escalators up to street level and the other one above the entrance to the Elizabeth line.
*That is what they are called, although some people may question this moniker.
As an aside, I've not yet even tried to interchange between the Central and Elizabeth lines at TCR station, but I have visited the new ticket hall - the height of the escalator shaft is profound.
Also, I am still in a state of sadness / 'being peeved' over the closure of all the retailers who were there before the new station building was built. One of the food outlets that was there was called Beard Papa's, they sold cream filled pastry puffs and this was their only outlet here in the UK. Asia is a long way to travel just for their products!
Thanks for the replies. I'm glad it wasn't just me being stupid. Artworks apart, I shall try Bond Street next time (although the Northern Line option at TCR appeals as one of those things you're not supposed to know about).
