Don't even have any words to describe the station. It is a mess and when will it get refurbished? it looks like an abandoned station while waiting for a train with it's awful state...

Its a reminder of what many stations were like, several decades ago!

I used to have to travel from Lambeth North some 40-45 years back. It was a delightful, if rather frustrating, antique, even then, but worth it for the period ambience and the comfort of the seats and characteristic sounds on the 38 stock.

I seem to recall the station having an internal re-paint and deep clean when the station closed for lift refurbishment circa 2017. Time clearly hasn’t been kind…

This sounds like the station to visit if you want to get a feel for what The Underground used to be like decades back.
Certainly stations are now cleaner, brighter, and more modern looking, but there was something incredibly appealing about the dusty old utilitarian nature of stations in the past.

Indeed, but just do not touch anything with your hand, nor allow clothing to brush against anything - as otherwise cleaning of a dirty black deposit of dust will be required!

And useage at present is about one-third of pre-Covid levels, still over a million a year, though.
There's no excuse for dirt, if that is the case.

ah, if only there was a magic cleansing system that 'dealt with' dust so that it never returned! In addition to helping keep stations and tube tunnels clean we'd all want this for our houses too!

Station presentation standards have declined in recent years, the network wide PPP refurbs were 15 years ago and most current work is limited to safety critical repairs. There is very little scope for any improvement in this area with the current financial situation, perhaps a symptom of the managed decline we were warned about?
One thing I have noticed on recent repaint jobs, that doesn’t seem to help matters, is the reluctance to use gloss paint on walls and ceilings. The most recent repaint jobs I’ve seen seem to result in a poor quality matt finish. The worst example I’ve seen is the Holland Park refurb, they hadn’t even finished rendering the walls and just slapped some inferior white matt paint over the top, the results only five years later look awful.

King's Cross? Gloss I think is a no-no, as is layering surface finishes. Cost therefore is higher.
