In line with previous years, it is the intention of the forum staff to have a social gathering on the 2nd Saturday in December - those interested in attending should mark Saturday 10th December in their calendars/diaries. Further details will follow, but expect a similar format to previous years.

LOCATION CHANGED - NOW AT THE MONKEY PUZZLE FROM 2pm- SEE POST BELOW FOR DETAILSAs noted, this year's gathering will be on Saturday, December 10th. In a change, we'll be meeting at the Sir John Oldcastle. This is a Wetherspoons in Farringdon, just a couple of minutes' walk from the station.
Walk along Cowcross St towards Farringdon Road. Once you reach Farringdon Road, the pub is in front of you, across the road. If you've reached Pret then you're walking in the wrong direction! Link to the pub's page on the Wetherspoons website is here - click.
Please RSVP here and we'll reserve a table of appropriate size!

As someone who isn't at all familiar with Farringdon station (I've only ever passed through on a train, I've never got off or changed there) is there a particular exit I need to follow signs for please or is there only one entrance and exit to the station? Thank you. Hoping to be there this year

There are multiple exits, but the one you want is either of the ones on Cowcross Street, which are the main entrances (the LU and Thameslink/Crossrail entrances face each other across the street, but all parts of the station are connected below ground). If you arrive on the eastbound London Underground the signs to the Elizabeth line will take you to the exit you need. The way out signage from the Elizabeth line will also get you to Cowcross Street. I've not arrived at the station any other way since several months before the Elizabeth line opened so don't know what the signage is like).
When exiting the station you want to head south. This means turning right out of the LU entrance on Cowcross Street or left out of the Crossrail/Thameslink entrance. If you have exited at the Turnmill Street entrance, turn right and then turn right onto Cowcross street and walk between the station entrances.

I will aim to try and attend, but it may well depend on whether I need to work or not!

Just a gentle reminder about this. Places are starting to book up for Christmas and I'd like to get our spot booked as soon as practically possible. So, please do let me know if you'd like to come along - the more the merrier!

IMPORTANT: CHANGE OF LOCATION!Due to Wetherspoons no longer taking reservations or not answering the phone at most of the pubs I tried, I have had no choice but to find an alternate location. Therefore, we are now meeting at The Monkey Puzzle ( The Monkey Puzzle's Website - has their menu) This is a Hall and Woodhouse pub that is located between Paddington and Edgware Road stations. It's less than a ten minute walk from either station; the staff informed me if you walk at any kind of reasonable pace you'll be there in five. Meeting time is 2pm.From PaddingtonExit the station using the pedestrian ramp (not the Elizabeth Line exit). Cross the main road, then walk along London Street. Pass Norfolk Square and Norfolk Square Mews on your left, then take the next left on to Sussex Gardens. Walk two blocks, then turn right onto Southwick Street. The pub is in the corner. From Edgware RoadThe station is on the corner of Cabbell St. and Chapel St. Exit the station and cross Chapel St, then walk down Cabbell St. Follow it to the end, then turn right on to Old Marylebone Road (A501). Cross over Edgware Road (A5) on to Sussex Gardens. Walk two blocks, then turn left onto Southwick Street. The pub is on the corner.

Nice place, been there a few times. IIRC one of the Diskworld groups used to gather there. Bein' as I'm working weekends and it's a bit of a distance anyway, I won't be there .

Ask a silly question, but what is the time of the gathering i.e. start, and maybe less certain , end time ? Neither the original venue announcement nor the new venue announcement have any times. I've never been to one before, considering this one, but knowing the time range might make a difference.

The 2021 social was advertised as starting at 2pm. The finishing time is a lot less easy to predict, but my memory of past events suggests some time between about 6pm and 11pm

Yup, thanks Chris - it is indeed 2pm. Finishing time is whenever we finish... but the pub closes at 11pm. I've amended my post.

I've never been to one before, considering this one, but knowing the time range might make a difference. The forum socials are quite a loose concept. Whilst the start time is 2pm it's not uncommon for people to drop in later after doing something else or to say hi at the start then go on the other things. Food sometimes gets ordered, but not always.

Well thats loosely exactly my loose plan = not to be there at a time cast in a possession plan unable to change, but to play it on the day; any ways you do this, you still need a base start time; resolved now anyway.

I am so sorry, I cannot now attend the Christmas social. Instead, I will be at a memorial service for an LGBTQ+ trailblazer who I first met when I was a student. With best wishes to all who get to socialise in person.

I'm on my way! Tho somewhat delayed because of the bus strikes. I'll hopefully get there just about at 2pm. If anyone gets there earlier, the table is booked under the forum name.
The forum phone will be turned on once I get to the pub - number is 07476 845057 - so if you can't find us or the pub, call or text!

I now won't be joining you. Slipped on some ice as I left the house. No major damage done, but enough to make a trip out unwise. Enjoy those who are going

The merry band of revellers (minus myself) Thanks to antharro for organising. The pub was an excellent venue. Staff were very friendly and helpful. A good time was had by all. Thanks, as ever, to Chris M for the quiz. A collective effort with all the right answers (eventually) even with the missing 'C'!!!!
