The incident happened alongside Barking Sidings, and then caused further damage to adjacent signalling cables. Investigations are still ongoing as to the extent of the damage.

This has really messed up my plan with my trainee - hope the technical staff are on their A game and can repair the damage as soon as possible!

It depends a lot on the extent of the damage. It's likely that some of the damaged cables are no longer manufactured and it may be necessary to do a 'cut and shut' where the existing cables are diverted into terminal boxes either side of the damage, and new cables run to bridge the gap. Some are more modern and it'll simply be a case of getting a drum out of the stores and jointing or re-running as necessary.
The last significant cable run fire was also at Barking, about ten years ago, and that was several days before the full service was reinstated. From photos I've seen today I don't think the damage is as severe, but I'm not the one on site making those decisions.

22Kv feeder cable exploded at 02.30 this morning near Upney substation. Possibly connected with the signal main loss yesterday affecting West Ham, Plaistow and Barking areas. May I put on a boring pedant hat ? I make this comment to parallel that other recent thread about "correct" use of English - correct use of symbols and units please ! Assuming that 22 is the correct quantity, it is 22 kV not 22Kv => there are three errors in the original four characters! The ISO standard requires a space between the quantity and the symbol, the symbol is small k for kilo and capital V for Volt. As long as 'ise' v. 'ize' is an issue with some, and apostrophes with others, so k versus K, and spaces versus no spaces, etcetera, is forever for me to comment on.

On a more serious point, todays operation of District line specials numbered in the 5xx and 7xx series enabled me to at last home in on and identify a minor but persistent issue with assets in my area. Bit extreme to need a cable explosion to uncover it, but nonetheless today has a positive outcome !

How are trains being stabled - I'm assuming Barking sidings are out of commission?

How are trains being stabled - I'm assuming Barking sidings are out of commission? Out of commission and still full of trains that didn’t start this morning. All service trains from the west end.

What a shame though that Hammersmith & City line passengers have to find their own way from Liverpool Street. In the old days they would have been able to wait on the platform for through trains at Stepney Green whilst the trains terminated at Whitechapel.
Was it not possible for the H&C trains to reverse at the West Ham siding, or even Plaistow bay platform?

Not sure there are enough S7 units not trapped by, or train operators not based wrong side of, the incident location to have run any more than has been run ?

Of course, with the shiny new Elizabeth line, Moorgate / Liverpool Street - Whitechapel now has an alternative and the connection isn't too bad at either Moorgate or Whitechapel.

Yet another attempted cable theft or vandalism on active cables brings things to a halt at Barking this evening. Any idea why someone has it in for this location and what if anything can be done to stop it?

what a saga!
if the cause is cable theft then it forebodes ill for other locations.
