The CO/CP stock had them too until 1981. The R stock did have two electric tail lights at solebar level like the 38ts but clearly these weren't reliable so they had a oil lamp! Interestingly when the A stock was first delivered they used oil lamps too as they had problems with their static converters in the early days. I'm sorry but it was nothing to do with that. The oil lamp was retained on all routes used by BR trains because, on BR, it was used to denote the rear of the train. Any train without an oil tail lamp was reported as incomplete. It was so ingrained in the rules that, to this day, I still always watch for the rear of a train to see that it has tail lights!

Looking at the condition of the train’s roof it seems to have spent a lot of time in the open.

Any train without an oil tail lamp was reported as incomplete. TP is correct (as usual). This of course was a major problem with Southern Region stock which (if so equipped) used two red squares in the illuminated rear two-headcode box in lieu of a red tail lamp. This was particularly the case with the 4-TC sets* that were used for example onto the GWR main line to and from the Reading Up bay via Reading New Junction en route to Tonbridge via Guildford, or on the Portsmouth-Reading via Basingstoke route. I am sure that 8-TC and 33/1 were used Portsmouth-Bristol, whch I used to catch in the early Eighties, but I am not now sure whether they used Mk 1 coaching stock. Stock from other regions used tail lamps on the SR, but I have heard of managers on other regions not being aware of the SR stock's non-requirement. This then led to attempts to ban further movement because, as TP says, they lacked a correct lamp. *On reflection this must have also been the case with the inter-regional use of SR DEMU sets! A quick check of a photo showed that they did use red squares.

Having spent the day musing over this one, my suggestion is thus:
Train stabling in Platform 1 at Drayton Park on the last day of service through to Finsbury Park. The train has left empty from Finsbury Park and reversed through 28 crossover at Drayton Park.
If it is the last train then I think the last move into FP was leaving Moorgate at 2002, though I seem to remeber reading somewhere that it left 10 minutes late - so 2002 off Moorgate becomes 2012, 2020.5 from Drayton Park, 2022.5 into Finsbury Park. (say 10 minutes for final farewells) Leave FP 2032.5 - into platform 1 at DP 6 minutes later (allowing for the reverse). So I reckon the photo would have been taken about 2045 in 3/10/64.
I'm probably utterly wrong here, but it has been fun thinking about it! ;D ;D

Personally I think you are along the right lines actually-then again I could be wrong! When are we going to be put out of our misery!
