Know that place! This station shares its name with the team currently leading the Premiership! Come on the Gunners-Its Arsenal of course-queued up outside there many a time!

Definitely Arsenal... Dammit, that's two days in a row I've known the answer straight away but not looked at the site in time. I guess that'll teach me to look at the site more often!

Why is it that a few members on this forum don't want to write the word ARSENAL! It is the correct answer and indeed the finest team in England (if not the world!)

Why is it that a few members on this forum don't want to write the word ARSENAL! It is the correct answer and indeed the finest team in England (if not the world!) Indeed it is. It's surprising how many people think Gillespie Road station was build with its sloping passageway to cater for the football traffic. The station, in fact, pre-dated Highbury stadium by several years. I also recall being told that Arsenal was the station furthest from a bus route.

Nothing wrong with football, as long as it doesn't go overboard! One thing I like about this site is that there arn't slanging matches every sat! When did Gillespie Road open-it was part of the Enfield West extension wasn't it?

When did Gillespie Road open-it was part of the Enfield West extension wasn't it? Gillespie Road was part of the original Gt.Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton railway opened on 15th December 1906. Arsenal football club moved to Highbury in 1913. The station was renamed Arsenal in 1932.

The station was renamed Arsenal in 1932. It was initially re-named "Arsenal (Highbury Hill)"

It was named Arsenal (Highbury Hill) until fairly late 1960, when the Highbury Hill bit was dropped. As pointed out, the station was known as Gillespie Road from opening in 1906 until 1932.
There are, as far as Arsenal supporters are aware, no plans to ever change the name again, so in theory, it should always remain as Arsenal Station.
I could bore you with details of how Highbury, almost opposite the station entry will be altered, but that's possible best saved for a football related place!
Meanwhile, there will be constant links within the station to Gillespie Road, but no mention of Highbury Hill AFAIAA
