<<Thread moved to reflect general discussion of Night Tube - goldenarrow>>
Apart from the media stating strikes on night tube, has any such trains on the two lines been running at night at a reduced service?
Even on on other lines, I know of such drivers and station staff during the lock down still signed on at work and just sat in canteen/mess room all night..

Yes they have. The Victoria line seem to have provided a better service than the Central but as different drivers will be scheduled each week as part of the roster, we'll have to see what the impact is on a week to week basis. RMT have announced strikes each weekend for the first six months of 2022 on each of the two lines with possible further action on the other Night Tube lines (Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly). London Underground have said that they cannot be held to ransom by a minority of drivers that voted to strike so we'll see where this leads to.

I don't know if its a typo but the RMT announcement said that members will not be booking on for "any duties commencing from 20:30 on any Friday until 08:00 the next day and not booking on for any duties commencing from 20:30 on any Saturday until 08:00 the next day". if that is correct then it would be Night Tube and most of the earlies. www.rmt.org.uk/news/rmt-confirms-further-strike-action-on-night-tube-from-new-year/Good news for the late turn drivers!

For a driver working early turns both Saturday and Sunday, losing two days pay will start to hurt quite quickly.

My impression is that the night services aren't worth the candle.
Why is there such a determination to run them, seemingly against all odds?

Does the union pay strike benefits for work lost during the action? Nope. Re Night Tube, on the Piccadilly line we found that after about 02:00 most trains were running around empty. There might've been a couple of people on trains in the central area, but it certainly didn't justify the service we were running. We thought the better option would've been to extend traffic hours by an hour on Friday and Saturday evenings. That would've served 95% of people wanting to use the railway, the cost to LU would've been minimal and allowed some engineering work on Saturday/Sunday morning. But we don't know nuffink, we were only operational managers.

Today's TfL press release says "Night Tube services were re-introduced on the Central and Victoria lines on the evening of Saturday 27 November. Despite strike action in the run-up to Christmas, TfL was able to run a regular and reliable Night Tube service on the Victoria and Central lines, with a full Victoria line service running throughout the majority of the overnight action." Also "The other Night Tube lines - the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines - will return to service as soon as practicable. TfL is working hard to resolve resourcing issues on these lines and there are other considerations such as the upcoming closure of the Bank branch of the Northern line to allow completion of the upgrade at Bank Tube station"

Will Night Tube services resume as previously there? Bank branch was not served due to those works, although night attractions on that branch. Also Battersea branch opened during the night service suspension. Other lines were based on 6tph through central area, but Northern Line had 8tph from Morden via Charing Cross, perhaps due to the Camden Town split being closer to central area. I wonder if night services will resume with 6tph from Battersea via Charing Cross and 6tph from Morden via Bank, and how this will affect Union attitudes to such resumptions.
