You have part of the link t697 Aha! Now we need someone to make a plausible guess for 'D' and if correct they'll probably have the rest of the link.

Location D: Ilford Depot - corner of building [ Deep Level ] (click for a larger version) We’ve figured out that they are all depots, but what links them and which is the odd one out

I'm hopeless at these so doubt it's this but... All service Bombardier (or predesessor names) trains. All built in Derby except the DLR trains making Poplar the odd one out.
Or; All situated on the north side of the main adjacent runnng lines except Ruislip which is on the south side.
Ruislip site also used by US forces in WW2 before taking up the intended role as railway depot and the only one with sizeable Engineer's train and PWay depot as well as servicing passenger trains.

My punt... Poplar is the odd one out as the only one without a connection to network rail infrastructure.

t697 johnlinford all those guesses are true, but it's not what we're after here. Neither Poplar nor Ruislip are the odd one out.

How about they all serve one TfL mode except for Ilford which serves two (Willesden is LO, Ruislip is LUL and Poplar is DLR while Ilford is LO & XR).

You've identified the odd one out but not the reason.

Ilford also serves Greater Anglia, the others only TfL modes/lines?

It's not about what the depots serve

Another unlikely reason for Ilford as odd one out - it's the only one to the east of the Greenwich Meridian. Poplar is just to the west.

That's the closest guess yet.

In the meantime, are they linked by being only one-word names?

No, it's nothing to do with names.

I doubt this is the answer if the closest guess so far is geographical, but... all apart from Ilford service DC electric trains.

You are correct that the answer we're looking for is geographical not about the type of stock.

Is it as simple as Ilford is the furthest East (and could also be the furthest north, it's a close run thing with Ruislip from memory)

East is relevant, north isn't, but it's not that Ilford is furthest east. Based on google maps air photos, the northernmost point of Ruislip depot is about 250 metres further north than the northernmost point of Ilford depot - although it's not easy to tell from air photos what the northernmost point of Ruislip depot is as it at some point on the western exit track (the northernmost point of Ilford is clearly the corner of a car park).

On the scale of London I think we can agree 250m is a close run thing!

Is Ilford the only one historically in Essex, the others all being in the historic county of Middlesex.

I fear Poplar was never in Middlesex but you might be on to something there...

Poplar was once in Middlesex, but boundaries were redrawn many decades ago so that there was no longer any Middlesex reaching the River Lea.
Tottenham and Enfield and I believe possibly Potters Bar were all in Middlesex 200 years ago. (clearly on Gray's 1824 map)

How about that each location is southeast of each other, except Ilford which is northeast of Poplar?
