Walking under the Gade Valley viaduct just outside Watford Met at 08.45 this misty morning, there passed overhead a decent length silver train, carriage lights on... I think it had single doors, like a D-stock, but I'm not sure. Might it be an RHTT?

That would seem logical, as you have described the D stock RAT - rail adhesion train - which is the London Underground version of the mainline railway RHTT (rail head treatment train) .

The RAT isn't silver any more though. Perhaps a trick of this morning's sunshine on the slab sided D78 vehicles though?

No, definitely base aluminium / "silver". Surely a RHTT would be much shorter, and no need to have all the lights on - the windows looked steamed up. It'll just have to remain a mystery...

The D Stock RATs are 5-car, painted Corporate white, low blue skirt and without red doors. Lights would be on for the crew to change ends inside.

Sounds like the D stock RAT to me.
Not sure what else it could have been.
