I lost my Oyster card a few days ago. Got a new one and stopped the old one after ringing TFL (which by the way was only a 20 minute call and the lady was very helpful). For reference, a new Oyster card can be issued from a ticket machine in the tube station and requires minimum of £5 deposit.
I did forget to ask two questions:
1) If the lost Oyster card is handed in by a stranger, is it returned to me? 2) How long do I have to transfer credit between the stopped card and the new replacement card? Transferring credit requires actually making a journey and I do not plan to use the network for several more weeks.

Re 2: Since I qualified for a Freedom Pass, very occasionally I still need to travel before 9h00. I have found the best way to have the card auto-top-up without deducting a fare is to speak to a friendly gate-line attendant who lets me pass through the gate line (thus applying the credit amount to the card) and then back out of the station without travelling. You may not be aware but a maximum fare debitted to your card on entry and corrected after you pass through the gate line at your destination. It is a legitimate request to curtail a journey immediately after having touched in and having travelled nowhere by rail. Even though it is systematically sloppy, it does work on LUL. Not sure about other operators. Perhaps others can assist.
