The October 2021 Underground News has an article on a 1910 Met Railway season ticket notice. This reminded me of season tickets held back in the 1970s. I believe that each passenger had an index card at their local station ticket office, and tickets could be renewed on the evening of expiry to avoid queues the following morning. Weekly tickets were issued on a similar basis, but no records were kept so if it was lost it could not be replaced. Back in the 1980s a relative held an annual ticket financed by their employer, and carried a wad of claim forms for each disrupted journey, which were refunded at the single ticket rate. With frequent disruption out on the Met, it seemed to be quite easy to reclaim most of the discounted annual ticket cost over time! Are seasons still issued and records kept, given Oyster allows more flexibility?

I think that on LU, they stopped referring to them as season tickets back in the 80’s when Travelcards were introduced.

Jimbo is quite correct about record cards being kept for other than weekly tickets. With the introduction of "Fares Fair" on 4th October 1981 separate West End and City zones covered the central area and simplified matters considerably. This was the precursor to the introduction of Travelcards across five zones on 22nd May 1983 which effectively phased out the traditional season tickets.

LU haven't quite stopped referring to Season tickets. There are still a small number of point-to-point weekly ones sold from stations where there is an NR service (Moorgate for instance), and generically any ticket valid for an unlimited number of journeys as opposed to a single or return is referred to as a Season.
On the Record Card front, they were logically filed in order of the holder's name. It may be an LU myth but I seem to remember that some stations with a concentration of local residents of a particular ethnicity with a naming style that resulted in more ambiguity than even Smith or Jones used an early form of customer number that let the booking clerk go straight to the right record card.
