TfL are currently conducting a £1m feasibility study on extending the DLR from Beckton to Thamesmead; estimated cost £800m, to be completed by 2030 but it would need either government and/or private sector funding. TfL's head of projects Matthew Yates stated that a further extension to Abbey Wood was being considered but that it would need its own business case.

"The councillors argued that extending the line to the Abbey Wood station would significantly boost the connectivity in the east of Greenwich, one of the least accessible areas of the city. A DLR link would directly connect the area to Bank as well as providing a connection to Elizabeth line and National Rail services." Could DLR to Bank cope with this extra demand?

The current constraint at Bank DLR is station passenger capacity not train paths - at peak times the circulating area does not always fully clear before the next train arrives. Passenger capacity at Bank DLR is being significantly improved as part of the Northern line works, so should not be a problem by the time any extension would even begin construction.
The limiting factor for trains is the Westferry-Royal Mint Street Junction stretch as about 1 in 4 trains go to Tower Gateway.
