Hi all,
I was standing on the northbound Northern Line platform at Charing Cross earlier on today and watched a train approaching along the southbound and it got me thinking. Is there sufficient clearence in the tunnels in advance of the Northbound Starter (EMB 009) for a direct Southbound-Northbound connection and if so, why isnt it implemented?

There is a crossover there already, unless I’ve misunderstood your post?

There is a crossover there already, unless I’ve misunderstood your post? Yeah no youre right but it goes in reverse from the southbound to the northbound. Im wondering if there is clearance for a crossover from the southbound to the northbound directly. |

Presumably it was a scissors crossover when the line opened (as it was the terminus), so should still be possible.

The CartoMetro map (v3.7) only shows what zcap describes; it also shows a loop that would do the job of reversing trains (loop removed 1925). |

The CartoMetro map (v3.7) only shows what zcap describes; it also shows a loop that would do the job of reversing trains (loop removed 1925). This loop was sealed after it was disused and later breached by a bomb during the blitz. I'm not sure if it is still flooded, but it would certainly require a lot of work would it ever be desirable to return it to service. |

The loop extension was built to allow interchange with the District line station, but originally the line terminated at the current Charing Cross station as mentioned earlier. The line also terminated there whilst the loop was abandoned and the southward extension constructed through it. |
