Had my first full day, in a long time, riding the Bakerloo once again. I noticed what a lot of units are currently affected by body-work 'repairs'. This is not a complaint I am making but merely an observation and request to know what is happening. Many units had exterior panels rubbed down to bare metal and some seemed to be possibly running with replacement panels. Are the works graffiti related or just life-extension measures? If anybody could enlighten me I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I saw a heavily gratified Bakerloo line train being detrained at Queen's Park the other day, so it's not impossible that the aftermath of this is part of what you're seeing.

it's damage to paintwork from graffiti removal where vynil was used to repair the paintwork has be flatted down for the vynil to stick, however seems replacement of vynil is not happening currently, and some vyniled panels have been removed giving the shabby look, This is down to the depot and not part of the Life extension repairs carried out at Acton other than the bodyside door pillar plates which are painted blue, and the intercar end panels which were removed and refitted after the structural repairs

There's various types of vinyl. If the trains are going through a wash it is hardly surprising that it is looking bad if a cheap type is being used.

On a slightly related note, what has happened to the interior car fitting of the LED bulbs, has this been stopped? I have been on the 72 stock recently and they are still using the old lighting scheme, infact, i am noticing more and more bulbs which are not working inside the carriages!
What will happen to the headlights used on the bakerloo line at the moment? Are they halogens? Halogens are set to be banned from sale from September so will be interesting to see what happens with the 72 stock headlights

I believe the headlamps on '72 stock use bulbs drawn from the automotive industry, rather than the domestic types found on earlier stock.

They only require a connection at one end unlike flourescent fittings. Quite a lot of work would have been required. There are a lot of power fluctuations too.

So how many trains have the new leds in their interiors? Will this be rolled out across the fleet? There is a video on YouTube showing an example of a train which had been done

I suspect the management may have given up on the 1972 stock.

I wonder if the use of 850Hz for lighting supplies on tube stock made it more of a challenge compared to other applications?

Let's hope some interior cosmetic care can be given. There are some carriages where on one side, all bulbs are out and therefore almost completely dark so I would wonder how many bulbs can blow before it's deemed unacceptable and has to be replaced by something better

Work has restarted and the rest of the fleet will be done, we will also be getting a wheelchair bay in the '42' special trailer car and new DVA systems with dot matrix displays but this will be after the LED lighting upgrade. Whist the new LED's are extremely bright and the interiors are well lit, they are a slightly higher colour temperature and I'm not personally a fan, too clinical for my liking (this is only really noticeable when comparing new and old units side by side)

Thanks for the information although I thought (perhaps wrongly) that the special trailer was the trailer in the 3 car unit - the 45XX car?
Is the 42XX car getting the wheel chair mods?

You are indeed correct, it is the special trailer 45xx car getting the wheelchair bay, I was clearly not concentrating enough when typing that out this morning!

You are indeed correct, it is the special trailer 45xx car getting the wheelchair bay, I was clearly not concentrating enough when typing that out this morning! We’ve all been there not to worry. Regarding the lights at the car ends I assume the main replacement saloon lighting has sufficient lux levels to deem them obsolete. These were added to offset the lack of car end windows. Obviously these won’t be added in this refurb due to cost and that was probably the reason why they weren’t added in the first place. From memory the A stock only just got them in under budget.
