As a child, I lived next door to the last manager of the coal depot at Grange Hill, a man fond of grass and incessant regular mowing. The site was converted to some kind of oil or gas depot after it closed for coal, then was abandoned and then recently I notice from maps etc has become stabling sidings. I also recall listening to train movements in the sheds at Hainault at night, and regularly - must have been early 60s - a sight of a steam shunter. I do not know if memory is faulty, but I clearly recall a crane wagon, which I THINK was steam self propelled, but memory could easily be faulty.

Have a look on the Historic board further down, there's been quite a bit on there about the subject of steam trains on the Central and Grange Hill.
