Passed through Marylebone on Thursday all gates open on gateline to Bakerloo line and printed labels stating Touchpad not in Use. It was not apparent that there was a stand alone Validator to touch in. Can anybody offer an explanation?

Probably a response to the impending escalator and gateline expansion works which will temporarily reduce passenger throughput.
The central staircase will be turned over to an escalator whilst the existing pair will be replaced. Demolition of the former ticket office will also enable the gateline to be expanded to help shift the crowds. The Network SouthEast colours are subject to a protection order so won't be going anywhere.
If all goes to plan, normality will be restored in Autumn 2023.

There are standalone validators either side of the pathway within the NR ticker hall.
Given the majority of exits are to interchange to NR, it wouldn’t surprise me if there is also some kind of auto complete in place for people who subsequently touch back in, and other Oyster logic for those exiting.

For the record, the TFL website confirms what is said previously:
