The comment about clocks reminded me of the escalators to the Central line at Tottenham Court Road which had such clocks. I think that it can be seen towards the beginning of the film American Werewolf in London.

Yes, and there was a similar one above the top of the Piccadilly line escalators at King's Cross - I remember it appearing in news footage of the fire, displaying the time it stopped when the flashover occurred.
