Not a great morning and afternoon today for the District line!
I was travelling from Southfields to Moorgate at around 8am. Coming into EPT, the driver made a PA stating that the line controller had asked us to remain at the platform for 5 minutes as there was a signal failure in the opposite direction. During the lengthy wait at EPT, the driver continued to provide updates, the main one being that there was a westbound train stuck immediately before the westbound platform at EPT. After more time, the train in question came into the westbound platform. Following this, we continued east.
I believe that at some point before arriving at ECT, the TfL website showed the line being suspended between Parsons Green and Wimbledon, with severe delays to ERD. Upon arrival into ECT, an empty train was reversed from platform 3 to Upminster. The journey to Temple was uneventful, albeit with longer waits at VIC and BFR. It appeared that passengers from the train in front (the one that reversed W-E at ECT) were tipped out at BFR and then joined our train.
On the way back to Southfields, there were quite a few trains going to Richmond. Again at Earl's Court in platform 3, a train was reversing east.
Based on this, I have a couple of questions:
1. I understand that either Network Rail or the line controller asked our train to remain at EPT. Since the signal failure was on the westbound, why were we asked to remain?
2. Why were trains reversing at Earl's Court, rather than go to Parsons Green sidings or Olympia? Is this option not more disruptive to the service?
3. Was the initial train that was reversed at ECT terminated short of Upminster?
