I remember reading in a book once a very casual reference to an extension of the Northern City Line from Moorgate to Plumstead that didn't happen. No more detail was given and I haven't read anything about it since. Most unbuilt tube lines can be visualised to an extent but it's a long way from Moorgate to Plumstead and I'm not sure what route it would have taken. Maybe underground to London Bridge and over existing tracks to Plumstead?
Does anyone know anything about this extension? I'm fairly sure it was still a tube line at the time.
Would it have been difficult to extend this line further south or was it more that the proposals weren't realistic? The proposed extension from Moorgate to Fenchurch Street and New Cross Gate and onto what is now the East London Line extension looks the most useful but I would guess the route that was eventually chosen was much cheaper as it mostly used existing current and former lines (as well as fitting in with the obsession with an orbital rail line).

Extensions from Moorgate have been done to death on this forum. The vaults of the Bank of England are a major barrier. Of course there used to be the link to the East London line via the St Mary's Curve and it was possible to run through New Cross station to Lewisham and beyond. The street entrance at New Cross used to be on the bridge. The existing buildings were built on the alignment of the through track.

Thanks, I've found a Northern City Lines extensions thread with lots of information.
I'd forgotten the vaults. Building a line around the vaults must also be difficult with so many other lines in the area and the whole Bank/Monument complex.
I didn't realise New Cross used to have a different entrance, interesting.
