Last night the first of MerseyRail's new trains was delivered to Merseyside:
(Three tweets embedded above)
Following platform alterations last summer, when the full fleet of these trains are in service the entire MerseyRail network will have no gap or step between the platform and train. An eight car peak-time train will have 4 accessible spaces and 12 cycle spaces, oh and you'll be able to see out the back like an observation car (possibly the front too).
As this board is for matters with an impact on LU, this makes the S Stock look pretty lame!

Door spacing looks a bit uneven for a metro train. The end car looks like loading and unloading will be slower than the others. What's the story there I wonder. Perhaps station dwell times are generous compared to LUL.

I think most of the Merseyrail network is suburban rather than Metro so perhaps the layout is a compromise with the end cars for longer distance travellers and the centre ones optimised for short distance?

So the doors fail in the front or rear coach and you have to walk through to another. That's a problem waiting to happen.

I think most of the Merseyrail network is suburban rather than Metro so perhaps the layout is a compromise with the end cars for longer distance travellers and the centre ones optimised for short distance? It's a bit like the RER in Paris or Crossrail in London, services up to an hour duration out of Liverpool to surrounding towns usually with 4tph. On the Wirral Line four branches combine at Hamilton Square to provide 16tph through central Liverpool. So the doors fail in the front or rear coach and you have to walk through to another. That's a problem waiting to happen. The cars are both articulated and walk-through; though yes, if the end doors fail it's a little bit of a trek to the next set.

Apparently the trains are longer than the 3 car trains they replace. Normally single unit trains will operate but just as sometimes there are 6 car (double unit) 507/508 trains so the new trains will also be capable of twin unit operation.
The door configuration was designed so that all passenger doors will still be able to open at all stations (including Underground) if operating as twin units. However the parts of the train which do not have doors might be beyond the platform area.
