Hello all, just a quick question. I was at Stratford around 17:00 yesterday and saw what I believe to be a rare train terminating at Leytonstone. As I haven't seen this outside of engineering works, I was wondering if this is a rare thing and if so, what the reasons behind it would be? Thanks.

A smattering of cancelations yesterday afternoon/evening resulting in some gaps in the service. That train you saw was probably having it’s normal trip cut short to fill a gap in the other direction.

There are scheduled Newbury Park terminating trains every 18-mins on Saturday afternoons, maybe a train running late?

Although not a scheduled reversing point, I’m pretty sure it’s used most days for the reasons already given.

IIRC, isn’t there a timetabled late-night reverser going west to east?

IIRC, isn’t there a timetabled late-night reverser going west to east? There are two Monday - Thursday. T142, dep. Epping 00:07, arr. Leytonstone 00:28, runs empty to Woodford sidings. T104, dep. Epping 00:17, arr. Leytonstone 00:38, does the mainline shunt over to Platform 3, dep. 00:57, arr. Hainault 00:12 I'm fairly certain there are no timetabled east to west reversers at Leytonstone although we've had quite over the last few days due to "a temporary shortage" of drivers.

Shows how times have changed,in the 70s & 80s there were timetabled Leytonstone reversers Monday to Saturday after 20:00 and all day Sunday. These were main line shunts.

Its much easier to terminate eastbound trains on Platform 2 so you don't have to tip people out and close up the doors. Also the east-to-west mainline shunt blocks off the Epping road until the train is back on the platform. The west-to-east mainline shunt blocks Platform 2 and Platform 3 but you can still send trains westbound off Platform 1.

Much lower off peak frequencies in those days so there would have been plenty of time to change ends without delaying the service. However, as you say, it’s much easier to terminate in platform 2, so I don’t know why the mainline shunt option was preferred.

Was the signalling layout changed in the area when ATO was introduced?

Yes - an additional crossover was installed from the EB to the WB approaching from the West, and one was removed between the WB and the WB reception road (which became the WB loop).

And it became possible to run in service from eastbound platform 3 back westbound.

And it became possible to run in service from eastbound platform 3 back westbound. This is the only move I've never seen here, I suppose its very rare - even more so than eastbound departures (towards Snaresbrook) from what are normally the westbound platforms.

Due to utter confusion on plt 3 I Ran empty to leyton IIRC To avoid passengers being over (Under?) carried.
