Is it to notify the signalman that the train is ready to depart?

Is it to notify the signalman that the train is ready to depart? Perhaps in the days when the cabin was manned. These days I don't think there is any provision for TRTS at Ealing Broadway.

It's definitely Ealing Broadway - platform 7.
I'm not sure if that plunger still works or not, but it was used when a train was stabled there overnight. The driver would use it to tell the signaller that he was on the train, and that the train was prepped and ready to go.
If any of that is wrong - blame my road training instructor operator!

Oh well..........looks like I'm wrong. I'm certain there are some railings with a concrete post at PG though....

I was thinking Ealing Common... Acton end of platform.
Alternatively, I was thinking of Highgate depot.

I suspect its Highgate Depot too - something about the orange cable in the background makes me think Northern Line.

I know what you mean, it does bear some similarity with the western end of PG W/B, where 29 road runs down the back of the platform. But there are too many rails in view for a single siding. I believe Colin has it spot on - it's platform 7 at Ealing looking across at the tracks into platforms 8 and 9 (platform 7 is nowhere near in line with the other two for some reason)

they use that kind of fencing all round highgate depot, I don't if it's a standard LU issue but they use it all round.
I reckon they are the sidings furthest from the covered area; closest to the builders centre.

Answer:
Well done adw, this is platform 7 at Ealing Broadway photographed while I was en-route to the meet at the Museum Depot open day.
I also didn't know what it was for until this quiz, so thanks Colin for explaining it!
