Gunnersbury Station. Sunday morning around 10:30. Two consecutive RRB's heading for Richmond were so packed that several people at Gunnersbury unable to board. A few of us were stuck at Gunnersbury for 40-45 minutes before a bus came along that we could actually get on.

Rail replacement bus provision is the remit of LUL; bus operators are contracted to provide buses to a set timetable or frequency. some of those I've been involved with such as Stratford-Loughton have a 3 minute headway throughout the day until mid evening; that expands to 6 minute headway until after midnight, then every 15 minutes to cover the night tube. At stratford the 3 minuet headway can be inadequate for the number of people travelling when the shopping centre closes, and traffic delays has a knock-on effect with those headwyas as well.
There's always standby buses rostered, but it's not possible to slot these in the middle of a service along the route to cover overcrowding. Very often the standby bus is located away from the main service due to road laout constraints.

Roy, "three minuets at Stratford" sounds like an avant-garde play title!d i Who actually specifies the RRB timetable and routes? eg Stratford to Loughton would lend itself to one express, via the M11, or to/from Chingford LO; and one "all stations"

Loughton-Chingford buses have been put on before, noticeably during one of the strikes, but I don't think it would be possible to cover the entire rush hour Central service with buses even if you had multiple vehicles leaving every minute and no traffic to contend with.

The Central post Chancery Lane closure of 2003 was interesting. I much appreciated riding from Chingford to Loughton in open-platform RTs and ex Harrods sightseeing 6-wheelers, not to mention the Blackpool Corporation Transport Atlantean that turned up once. What spoiled it was Essex Police's failure to control the A104/A1069 junction, which led to mile-long queues......

My experience of the most recent Central Line RRB from Loughton to Stratford is that it is quite efficient. Stratford -> Snaresbrook -> South Woodford (or near to South Woodford!) -> Woodford -> Roding Valley -> Buckhurst Hill -> Loughton. It seemed to be well thought out, running straight up an A road from Snaresbrook to Stratford. I wish there were more closures (living in Roding Valley) - we never had so many busses

Who specifies the bus timetable? On planned work, TfL. On emergny, whatever can be rustled up to run some sort of service. When the east end of the Central is shut, services run Stratford-Snaresbrook-all to Loughton including Roding Valley, usually by Sullivan Buses. Ensign usually do something like local stops round to Loughton using single decks, not too sure of their stopping pattern! Another company do Stratford-Leyton, Leytonstone-Redbridge-Newbury Park. Contracts are let on an annual or longer basis from what I understand, so if the job crops up again, the original operator gets the job again without it being tendered again. There's adjustments in price for diversions or alterations to the service and frequency.

The Rail Replacement Bus Service for the Richmond branch closure is the same rail replacement bus timetable that has operated since Jan 2018, and this is the first time there has been an issue. Perhaps there was some event on that caused an unusally high demand.
