No-one mentioned 30th April was 40th anniversary of the official opening to Charing Cross. Unlike the Vic line which did its first 40 years with one fleet, the Jubilee is now on its 3rd fleet (72TS, 83TS, 96TS), not counting the weekend or so mentioned on this site a while ago when Willesden Green - Charing Cross it was run with 59TS from the Bakerloo.

Is that this the greatest number of fleets per year of any line? The East London Line has been quite varied over the recent years (working backwards); 378, A, D, A, 1938TS, CO/CP etc.

Bit odd that they didn't at least make a press release for the anniversary, seeing as it's in the top 11(12) most used Tube lines.. I did find this on TfL's website. Maybe they'll make one for the 50 th anniversary, see you in 2029![/sup]

Had a very informative Jubilee Line history talk given by the knowledgeable Chris Nix at the LTMuseum Depot the other weekend. Was well worth the entrance money.

Unfortunately it was on the Northern line platform at Charing Cross.

Didn't the 1986 stock also carry out various trails on the Jubilee? Of course that would push the term "fleet" to its true definition!?

Didn't the 1986 stock also carry out various trails on the Jubilee? It ran in service as part of the development programme. The prototype 1935, 1956 and 1960 stocks also ran in service before the production series were built. Unlike the 1986 stock, all the 1938 and 1956 stocks remained in service until shortly before the production series started to be withdrawn In view of the urgency of replacing the pre-war stock on the Central the decision was made to built a repeat order of 1959-type stock (the 1962 stock) instead of developing the 1960 stock further (indeed, such was the urgency that most of the 1959 stock was initially diverted from the Piccadilly to the Central until its own trains were ready) but many of the design features of the 1960 stock ended up in the next generation 1967/72 stocks. The 1986 stock was too dissimilar to the production series 1992 stock to be worth integrating into the 1992 stock fleet. Although they could have formed more than half the new W&C fleet (three trains out of five), The City was paying for that line's upgrade so it got completely new trains. It still happens - the first S stock and 2009 stock trains were tested extensively before the production series started to be built, with modifications. The intention was to modify the prototypes to standard when the fleet was complete, but in the case of 2009 stock it proved cheaper to scrap the prototypes and built two new units with the same numbers (although many components were no doubt recycled)

Returning to the Jubilee Line......it certainly has gone through a lot of changes in its 40 years and certainly in my lifetime. Aside from the rolling stock changes, it has gone from crew operated, to one person operation to automatic operation. It’s had a huge extension and had the current fleet extended.
Most of the above were planned at one stage or another in the past and generally I think it is a pretty successful line.
Happy 40th, I’m not far behind.....

The 20th anniversary of the first section of the Jubilee line extension opening is coming soon.

When is the anniversary of the JLE opening (well the first section of it)? What day is it on?

14th May from Stratford to North Greenwich. Cool. I bet it'll be all over Twitter. Is that the section which opened first? Yes, it was a low-key "soft" opening. I remember using it the week after, and it wasn't exactly busy at that time.

I always thought the part going from Westminster was first to open. I would have been 9 years old when it opened, but I don't remember hearing about it anywhere or going on it. It's much busier now though

Westminster was the last station to open: Stratford-North Greenwich 14 May 1999 North Greenwich-Bermondsey 17 September 1999 Waterloo-Bermondsey (except London Bridge and Southwark) 24 September 1999 London Bridge 10 October 1999 (last day of Jubilee line service to Charing Cross 19 November 1999) Green Park-Waterloo (except Westminster), Southwark 20 November 1999 Westminster 22 December 1999

We now seem to be talking about the extension, twenty years ago. The opening of the Jubilee Line as a separate Line was 40 years ago, and parts of it are much older than that - the section from Finchley Road to West Hampstead was already nearly 100 years old, having opened in June 1879 as part of the Metropolitan Railway.

The JLE has now been in place for half the lines lifespan. I still think of it as brand new...
