Heard this was due to a couple of faulty trains, but it seemed to take ages to sort out with a lengthy suspension. Still reporting severe delays at 9pm.
Any further details?

Passing through Bank at about 5:30 the recorded announcement about the delays was "very strongly advising" people to "avoid the Central line if you possibly can", with an announcement I heard once giving details of alternatives (National Rail, TfL Rail and Overground from Liverpool Street, District line for Mile End, DLR for Stratford, etc) and staff on the DLR platform were advising how to get to Stratford when announcing every train. This is not the first time I've encountered severe delays on the Central during the evening rush hour while I've been at Bank, but it is the first time I've heard so much effort being given put in to directing people to alternatives. I think gaps of 10 minutes were mentioned at one point but I'm not sure, which would certainly make for packed platforms and trains.

Several trains losing positive shoes coming off the Ruislip road due to overturned rail.

A track fault in the Greenford area caused five trains to shed a number of positive shoes, eventually resulting in two trains becoming stalled. A series of pushouts and wrong direction moves then took place to remove these trains from the running lines, with more work to be done at close of traffic.
As one would expect, this caused significant disruption to services, effectively suspending the West Ruislip branch and then expanding further to White City once recovery efforts were underway (trains moved into White City sidings, requiring a large amount of points to be secured in and around that area). This left the service running only to Queensway for much of the peak, and in reality it’s difficult to turn around much more than 6tph there in unplanned circumstances.

Stratford platform 6 was unusually crowded at about 17:00, thankfully because I was using a paper ticket* from Ilford I did not need the Central line. Also unusual were the frequent announcements, including one saying that a train was a non-stop Hainault via Newbury Park. As thats when my TfL Rail service arrived I did not wait to find out more.
Passengers were even being advised to use local buses. Epping branch passengers were told that they would need to change at Leytonstone.
*I went to see the new Class 230 train so had a paper ticket rather than an Oystercard. Normally when using an Oystercard the fare is 40p dearer if I go to Ilford instead of Gants Hill, even though both are in zone 4.

I think gaps of 10 minutes were mentioned at one point but I'm not sure, which would certainly make for packed platforms and trains. A train every ten minutes, how awful; it's almost like living in the north. And that's just unthinkable.

The Jubilee suffering with a broken train at Canary Wharf sent thousands from Canary Wharf to Bank on the DLR. The crowd control in the DLR passage was very good though, plenty of announcements and advice, such as Monument was a better exit if Bank was the final destination. Ever since my first day in London in 1994 I have been amazed how much is built under Bank given the tiny ancient street entrances.
