I wonder what they are doing in there, that causes such uncertainty.

Just covering themselves it seems. This has been done a couple of times over the past couple of years on different lines.

I seen to remember when the No.7 points were replaced at Paddington (Bakerloo) there was a similar precautionary message that was also on the side of caution.
I think the works over night on the Jubilee must have involved the use of "quick cast" concrete since once your committed to pouring, that's it, you just have to wait it out with thermal blankets. Certainly listening to the rails South of Finchley Road, track replacement has been ongoing for a number of weeks.

I have been trying to renew my fence recently so I am familiar with the concept of rapid set concrete! I assume it all went off ok in the end then?

Curing for concrete in this sort of application is quite scientific and precise, there are usually thermal blankets used to speed up the curing time and there are restrictions on what you can/can't do whilst the curing takes place. It's interesting how variable this can be; a vent shaft nearby can seriously prolong the time needed. On the first weekend at Paddington, we only just finished in time and the Head of the Track Programme was seen helping to clean the platforms up ready for the first train. I think he still had a mop in his hand as the train rolled in!
