I was surprised to see T121 pull into Loughton platform 1 this morning from the sidings with the DMI display reading "Ongar". Or perhaps it's a portent of the future, as Epping Forest DC want to build a couple of thousand houses in the now totally unsustainable locations of Ongar and North Weald?
Presumably, the dot matrix can be arranged to give any legend?

We've had this lots of times. All the 92ts can display all 92ts destinations, including Ongar.
And yes, that includes the W&C trains/destinations.

Thanks vm, ST Interesting that North Weald was thought of...presumably for the air displays? South Woodford presumably for trains to be worked into the sidings at Woodford?

North Weald was also on the final blinds issued to the 1962 / 1960 stock. In latter years, some trains only went as far as there. You are correct about South Woodford. EDIT: I also believe the 92 stock can display Tottenham Court Road.

Is the DVA system linked to the dot matrix, or is it run separately? I would love to see the confused look on people's faces when they hear "This is a Central line train to Waterloo" or, even better "...to Ongar/North Weald". Why would LU decide to include those destinations on the dot matrix? Could it be that they were anticipating a sudden surge in passenger numbers to make an increase in supply from Epping to Ongar economically viable?

Years ago now (probably about 2008), on one of the early forum meets the driver of the central line train we boarded at (iirc) Debden recognised us and played the DVA messages for Waterloo. I recall surprised looks on the faces of fellow forum members (including mrfs42) but don't alas remember the reaction of the normal travelling public. I strongly suspect that having a common set for the W&C and Central line fleets was cheaper than specifying two different ones. The Epping-Ongar section didn't close until 1994 so when the DVA was scoped it was likely not certain the service would be withdrawn.

Hmm, a (possibly) very errant thought that is directly related to this thread's tittle. Today is Wednesday 13th March 2019. In a little under three weeks from now will be a very good day for all eastbound Epping trains to show Ongar. But only before midday! The same thinking could see westbound District line trains heading to Ealing Broadway show Windsor, some eastbound District line trains heading to Upminster could show Southend and with a little lateral thinking and awareness of what was likely a longer-term plan, Jubilee line trains heading for Stanmore could show St Albans! I could continue... Ongar was always meant to be an intermediate point on the way to Chelmsford and Morden on the way to Cheam or even Epsom! But this might cause confusion.

The Epping-Ongar section didn't close until 1994 so when the DVA was scoped it was likely not certain the service would be withdrawn. Spot on. There was still a possibility it would stay open. And to my knowledge 92TS did go to Ongar twice, but only as test trains testing low voltage operation. I wonder whether the new upgrade will remove North Weald and Ongar from the destinations library.

(somewhere in my collection are print photographs taken on the day!)

SPS, although Ongar was certainly not intended to be the end of the line, I don't think Chelmsford was where it'd have reached. I thought that was the Central Essex Light Railway ending up in the metropolis of Great Bardfield, via Dunmow? What you may be thinking of was the LOIS study of c1997, which did postulate a Chelmsford-Ongar link; but this rapidly became untenable when they realised quadrupling (and multiple demolitions) south of Loughton would probably be necessary. If Crossrail 2 had been pursued up the Central Line main line, then of course we might have seen a resurrection of LOIS...

The infrastructure beyond Epping is now privately owned as the Epping-Ongar Railway.
Roger Wright, the owner is aiming to extend to a new platform near Epping station.

I recall reading that the GER intended to extend the line to Chelmsford but can't find any confirmed references now.

There have been PM discussions about retaining North Weald
Pre-M11, it was earmarked for massive housing development and there were rumblings about an M11 Parkway, which I understand was abandoned in gestation as it would have taken too long to reach central London from there. This was all a long time ago now. (55 years?)

They should have sent the G E electrics to the Epping line and the Central to Chingford.

They should have sent the G E electrics to the Epping line and the Central to Chingford. I think the route to Epping / Ongar and the loop via Hainault were difficult to operate, as some of the trains went to / from Fenchurch Street and these had to cross all lines out of Liverpool Street.

Presumably the reason was that there were the main line trains west of Clapton Junction to consider, whereas the whole of the Ongar and Loop lines were to be self contained east of Stratford. Also space was needed (vice the Newbury Pk-Ilford spur) for Ilford depot, and there was nowhere on the Chingford branch that could have accommodated a vast place like Hainault depot. Redbridge and Gants Hill were also in a huge area of 1930s housing remote from a station? The Fenchurch service via Bow Rd, Burdett Rd etc was to be replaced by a Stratford-Fenchurch shuttle, but that of course never happend and remains one of London's railway appendages...
