Speaking as someone who's sold 40+ of his own paintings, I've only two queries with the concept. One, of course, why haven't they approached ME yet? The other-art is purely subjective;struggle as we might, none of us can deliver an objective assessment of what constitutes art, let alone good or bad art. Is that therefore an appropriate subject to be on the Tube Map, which shouldn't be remotely subjective, unless we want to have referenda on a daily basis about which Tube Line's services are going to be serving which termini tomorrow? Might be fun, but.................. There’s surely no reason why the cover of the Tube Map shouldn’t contain something subjective. If I don’t like the current edition maybe I will the next one. Either way isn’t it better than just another advert?

An interesting thought for those advocating that that cover should be linked to the service/system is that the 'Night Tube' map appears to be fringed with Maroon, Pink and Yellow. All lines which don't operate a night service. Night Tube version: (Whitechapel Overground open)

Might be fun, but.................. Reminds me of the 'Smith & Jones' sketch where Mel Smith is behaving to Griff like a pretentious art critic whilst looking at a "Jackson Polllock" type painting, only for the decorators to walk in and take away their dust sheet. Brilliant Those head to head sketches were pure art. The one where Mel was explaining the concept of 'smart casual' to Griff was priceless. And when Mel started a diatribe on what it meant to be a good father, Griff's under the breath "well fathering a child would be a good start", was another classic.

Weighing in with an opinion here because after all, that's all that any of us can offer, but I actually quite like it!
The fact that we're all talking about it and that hopefully at least some have read the details about the full work on the Art on the Underground website means that to an extent the piece has worked.
It's different and that's all good in my book!

It reminded me of the health warning on a cigarette packet.

Anything can be classed as art, even a blank cover! So it’s actually impossible for art not to be on the front cover. Cue the discussion on philosophy! If you really want to get into it, what isn't an appropriate place for art? Where I am, any building built with public funds must have some form of art on display*. Usually that means a sculpture here or there, but it allows new outlets to be provided, especially on college campuses and government buildings. Despite the mixed feelings towards this particular edition, I'd assume we all prefer the next bold/disputed artwork over the space being relinquished for purposes of ad revenue. Unless we switch to writing "MAP" in big bold letters, which could just as well be considered art. *Source: Link

Its a map, used for getting around the tube network. Does it matter what is on the front?

Its a map, used for getting around the tube network. Does it matter what is on the front? I say it matters because it's used for getting around (1) it's a thing in everybody's hands therefore (IMO) it should be as nice as possible - any decoration is "art" in it's widest sense (2) it's in everybody's hands therefore any message on it matters - if someone tried to put a Nazi message on there, there would not be appropriate. I personally think it appropriate for challenging art to be on there.

If somebody put a POLITICAL message on, it wouldn't be 'appropriate', NAZI or otherwise.

Difficult. Politics uses Art, and extreme Politics uses extreme Art.

Considering the outrage caused by a relatively harmless feminist statement, I can't wait to see the outrage that next year's programme will cause... Has there been outrage over it? I'm surprised anyone worked out what it was meant to be. I'm a bit isolated here in 'The North' (as it's called), and I've run out of credible newspapers.
