It's a very poor April fool. A good April fool should be taking something that's actually impossible/vanishingly unlikely, and making it seem real. Unless you are an 'underground nerd' you'll have no idea whether or not reopening any particular station is feasible and it may well be a superficially very desirable idea. A good April fool gets more and more outrageous until only the slowest fail to get it. Whereas this just waffles on in a vaguely believable way and at the very end say's it's a lie.

Strand station can't reopen as it was never closed - just renamed Charing Cross.

Strand station can't reopen as it was never closed - just renamed Charing Cross. Aldwych was called Strand when it opened in 1907 but was renamed soon after to avoid confusion with the one at Charing Cross.

Some years ago, chatting to my father's carer, a South African lady, we got to talking about remembering things one had heard as a child. I commented "its like believing spagetti grows on trees". I got an odd quavery look, and was told that she had said just that to her daughter, with the response "Don't be silly, mum, of course it doesn't!". Ho hum, what have we here. I then called up the 1957 broadcast on youtube. "Oh thank you, thank you". She genuinely hadn't realised it was an April Fools, I guess the media being far more limited in her homeland at the time!

That was the famous 'Panorama' spoof fronted by Sir Richard Dimbleby

See also the 1977 Guardian supplement on the history, geography and politics of the Indian Ocean island of San Seriffe - covered in Wikipedia for those who weren't around at the time.

It's an April fool but I can see how easy it is for people to fall for it, especially those who aren't LU enthusiasts or have an extensive knowledge of the network like we do on here. I don't really understand why newspapers publish hoax stories. I bet many fall for them and actually believe they are genuine. I always avoid news sites on April 1st.
